at all.â
âSit down, Bernie,â the Headmaster said. He pointed to a little chair in front of his little desk.
I lowered myself into it. My knees hit my lips!
âSir, I didnât make those dog barking sounds during the Morning Announcements yesterday,â I said. âI know it sounded like me. But it wasnât.â
Upchuck rubbed his bald head till it was as shiny as a bowling ball. âBernie, youâre not in trouble,â he said.
âOf course not, sir,â I said. âI try to be a perfect student.â
âIn fact, I have a very big job for you,â he said.
Uh-oh.
Now I KNEW I was in major trouble!

âA job, sir?â I said. âWell, if youâd like me to take over the Headmaster job for a day or two, Iâm sure I could do it. But weâd miss you, sir. Weâd miss you a lot!â
He rubbed his head till it glowed like a lightbulb. âNo, Bernie. Thatâs not the job,â he said. âIâm naming you head of the Parentsâ Day Committee.â
I swallowed my gum.
âWh-who else is on the committee?â I stammered.
âNobody,â Upchuck said. âIâm putting you in charge because youâre the biggest troublemaker on campus.â
I could feel myself blushing. âYouâre too kind, sir.â
A grin spread over The Upchuckâs shiny face. âSee, Bernie? This is your last chance. If you fail at this job, I will pack your bags for you.â
âPack my bags, sir?â
âYes. And Iâll do cartwheels across the Great Lawn,â he said. âBecause Iâll be sending you home for good.
Â
âYAAAAAAAY!â
Â
He hopped onto his desk and did a wild dance.
âHel-lo! Fail at this job?â I cried. âI donât think so. I donât know the meaning of the word fail .â
He stopped dancing. âDonât spoil my fun,â he muttered.
âSir, what exactly is my job?â I asked.
He dropped back into his doll chair. âYour job is to make sure everything stays calm and quiet at this school for Parentsâ Day. If anything goes wrongâ anything at allâ¦â
âSir, how could anything go wrong?â I said. âMy middle name is Calm and Quiet. Iâll make you proud, sir. Proud you named me chairman.â
âBernie, shut up,â Upchuck said.
âOkay, sir. You got it!â I flashed him a two-finger salute.
The Headmaster handed me a big shopping bag. âBernie, these are the Parentsâ Day invitations for the parents,â he said. âAngel Goodeboy works in my office three days a week. He already addressed all these invitations.â
âGoodeboy is a good boy!â I said.
âI want you to mail them to the parents,â Upchuck continued.
âNo prob, sir,â I said. âIâll get Belzer right on that.â
âThereâs more to this job,â The Upchuck said. âI think youâll like this part, Bernie. I need you to raise a lot of money. We need the best snacks and refreshments money can buy.â
âFor me , sir?â I said. âOh no. You donât have to pay me with snacks. Iâm happy to do my duty and serve my school andââ
âShut up, Bernie,â Upchuck said.
I gave him another salute.
âYou need to raise money to put out fabulous foodfor the parents. I really want to impress them.â
I nodded. âAnd we should dress all the kids right to make it a very special day. Every single student should wear a Tweenage Mutant Ninja Tadpoles shirtâright, sir? I just happen to have a fewâ¦â
Upchuck jumped to his feet. âTime for you to beat it,â he said.
He walked me to the door. I could hear the guard dogs growling outside. I wished Iâd brought more hamburger meat.
âBernie, remember,â Upchuck said, unlocking the thirty-four locks,
