Henry said.
The two boys spread the blanket. Before they could unpack their lunch, the children heard a strange sound.
âWhat was that?â Jessie asked.
Watch leapt to his feet and began to bark. Then he ran into the woods. Henry chased after him.
âWait, Henry,â Jessie called out. âWeâll all go with you.â
âThis reminds me of the time we heard that strange noise in the woods near our boxcar,â Violet said as they hurried after Henry.
âViolet! Jessie! Over here,â Henry called.
They found Henry talking with a girl about Jessieâs age. She was wearing a purple top and matching shorts. She looked very worried and there were tears in her eyes.
âThis is Courtney Jenkins,â Henry said. âCourtney, I want you to meet my sisters, Jessie and Violet, and my little brother, Benny.â
âHello,â Courtney said softly. She wiped the tears away from her smooth brown cheeks and tried to smile.
âHi,â Benny said.
âNice meeting you,â Violet said.
âHello, there,â Jessie said. âWhatâs wrong, Courtney?â
âMy brother Michael is lost somewhere in these woods,â Courtney said. âWe moved into a house on Murray Street a few days ago. Today, we decided to do a little exploring. Michael wandered off while I was picking some flowers.â
âDonât worry,â Violet said. âWeâll help you find him.â
The children began searching for Michael. Theyâd only been looking for a short time when they heard Benny calling them.
âHere he is!â Benny said excitedly. âI found him!â
A small boy sat in the center of a large patch of blueberries. His hands and mouth were full of the ripe fruit.
âMichael,â Courtney said. âWhy didnât you answer me? Iâve been calling you for more than an hour!â
The little boy slowly chewed and swallowed the mouthful of berries.
âI heard you, Courtney,â Michael said. âBut every time you called me my mouth was full. You told me donât ever talk with food in your mouth!â
The children all laughed. Courtney pulled her brother to his feet. She wiped a blue smudge off his small brown chin.
âI guess I canât be too mad at you,â Courtney said. âThese blueberries do look delicious.â
âThey sure do,â Benny said, âbut Iâm just not hungry anymore.â
âYouâre not?â cried Violet.
âNo,â Benny said. âNow Iâm starving!â
CHAPTER 3
New Friends
H enry brought the picnic basket over to where Benny had found Michael. The girls spread the blanket near a tree. The Aldens shared their delicious lunch with Courtney and Michael.
âItâs a good thing we packed some extra goodies for lunch,â Jessie said as she watched Benny and Michael divide the last few chocolate chip cookies.
âThis is the first time Iâve ever met anyone who loves to eat as much as Michael does,â Courtney said, smiling.
âIt looks like Bennyâs found a friend in more ways than one,â Violet said.
After they finished eating, the children began to pick the blueberries.
âThese blueberries are going to make a prize-winning pie for the county fair,â Henry said.
âWhat fair?â Courtney asked.
âEvery year, Greenfield has a county fair,â Jessie explained. âThis year they have a $25 cash prize for the best baked goods, the best art project, and the best craft project.â
âHenry and I are going to bake a blueberry pie,â Benny told Michael.
âI want to help,â Michael said. âBlueberry pie with ice cream on top tastes good.â
âThis pie is for the fair contest, Michael,â Henry said.
âThatâs okay,â Michael said. âWe can make two pies. One for the fair and one for us.â
âThatâs a great idea,â said
