âMrs. McGregor is showing them how to make pie crust.â
âI canât wait to see how their pies turn out,â Violet said.
âI canât wait to taste one,â Jessie said.
âYouâre starting to sound like Michael and Benny,â Courtney said as she climbed inside.
Jessie and Violet showed Courtney their boxcar treasures. Courtney smiled when she saw Bennyâs pink cup with the crack in it.
âThis is a great place to play,â Courtney said.
âIt sure is,â Jessie agreed. âWe love it out here.â
âYouâre just in time,â Violet said. âWeâre about to get started on our fair projects.â
âGood!â Courtney said. âIâve bought something special to show you two.â She placed a small wooden box on the table. Jessie smiled when she saw what was inside.
âLook at all the beautiful beads,â Jessie said as she scooped up a handful.
âIâve never seen anything like them,â Violet said. âI love the colors.â She held a small purple bead in her hand. It sparkled in the sunlight.
âThese beads were made in Africa,â Courtney explained. âMy parents brought them back for me when they visited there. I thought we could make a beaded necklace and earrings like some African women wear. Then we could enter them in the fair.â
âThatâs a wonderful idea,â Jessie said.
âHave you decided what youâre going to paint, Violet?â Courtney asked.
âI finished the sketch last night,â Violet said.
âIâd love to see it,â Courtney said.
Violet opened her sketchbook and showed the drawing to Courtney. It was a vase, filled with flowers of all types, sitting on a small wooden table near a window.
âThatâs going to be lovely,â Courtney said.
âThank you,â Violet said. âIâm hoping one of us wins first place, then we can buy Grandfatherâs surprise birthday present.â
âOh, so thatâs why you all want to win so much,â Courtney said, smiling. âThatâs a wonderful way to use the prize money.â
âHeâs always doing something nice for us,â Jessie explained. âWe want to do something special for him.â
âWell, letâs get started,â Courtney said. âThe sooner we finish, the sooner we can enter the contest.â
Violet set up her easel by the door, where the light was good. Jessie and Courtney arranged and rearranged the beads until they made just the right combination. The girls worked all morning on their projects.
âLook, Violet,â Jessie said. âWeâre finished with our necklace.â
âOh,â Violet said. âItâs beautiful.â
âWe need to buy some more silver wire before we can finish the earrings,â Jessie said.
âYouâre right,â Courtney said. âThereâs only enough left to make one earring.â
âI need to go to the crafts store, too,â Violet said. âIâm just about out of yellow paint.â
The girls walked into town to the crafts store. Jessie and Courtney followed Violet over to the art supplies aisle.
âHere it is,â Violet said. âShimmery Yellow #7. Can you see the little bits of metallic paper mixed in with the paint?â
âIâve never seen paint like that before,â Courtney said.
âItâs new,â Violet explained. âThe metallic paper helps to reflect the light. It makes the paint look like sunshine. Iâm going to use it to put the finishing touches on the flowers in my painting. The best thing about this paint is that as long as itâs still wet, itâs easy to remove. That way, if you make a mistake, you can still fix it.â
âYour painting is going to be beautiful, Violet,â Jessie said. âCome on. Letâs find the wire we need to finish those earrings.â
