absolutely terrific corporate lawyer.â
âIâve heard of her.â
âKayâs been doing a great job of helping me get my fatherâs estate straightened out.â She laughed, shaking her head. âThe affairs of Mechanix International are really screwed up, Jake. My dear departed dad was in cahoots with all sorts of scoundrelsâcrooks, Teklords and a wide variety of government sneaks.â
Jake asked her, âAre you going to be, do you think, controlling the operation eventually?â
âYou bet your ass I am,â she assured him. âWeâre going to dump all the doinks and deadheads. Roger Zangerly is helping out, too. Heâs one of the few Mechanix execs I can halfway trust.â
âAnd what about Barry Zangerly?â
âWe arenât,â she said, spreading her fingers wide and studying them, âliving together anymore.â
Jake said nothing.
âBut Iâm not going back to my old promiscuous ways,â she added. âIâm living aloneâwithout even a servobot to help outâat my fatherâs Palisades Sector home.â
âBig place to inhabit alone.â
âYouâve been there, havenât you?â
âOnceâbriefly.â
âThatâs right, you were lured there andââ
âLured is too polite a word to describe it,â he put in. âI was out-and-out dumb and let myself get conned. I almost got trounced as a result.â
âMy fault that was.â
He grinned. âNope, entirely mine.â
âWell, youâd been hired to find me.â She leaned back in her chair. âHired by Barry actually. I feel badly about abandoning him. But I really think itâs important to be by myself for a while.â
âThanks for letting me intrude on your solitude tonight.â
âYouâre one of the exceptions.â Alicia blinked, sitting up. âOh, you were teasing me, werenât you? Am I starting to sound self-important and soulful?â
âJust a mite.â
âIâll quit,â she promised. âTell me what youâre working on nowâif itâs not confidential.â
âAt the moment Iâm between cases.â
Resting her elbows on the table again, Alicia said, âIâve been thinking Iâd like to see you now and then. In a strictly friendship sort of way.â
âIâm pretty much practicing the solitary life myself these days,â he told her. âAs far as any sort of social life goes.â
She said, âI suppose Iâm making too much of the fact that you saved my life.â
âThat was part of my job,â he said. âWhat you have to understand, Alicia, is that any one of a dozen other Cosmos Detective Agency operatives couldâveââ
âExcessive modesty doesnât fit you very well.â She gave a shake of her head. âIâm not a schoolgirl and this isnât a crush. I like you âJake Cardigan. If weâd met at a party or a brawl, Iâd still think of you as an exceptional person.â
âAn exceptional person whoâs nearly twice your age.â
She laughed. âIs that whatâs bothering you? You donât want to get involved with a kid?â
Jake studied the black starless sky up above the restaurant deck. âItâs simpler than that,â he answered finally. âI donât want to get involved with anybody, age has very little toââ
âExcuse me, amigo , for intruding on what sounds like itâs bound to develop into a very touching spielâand how might you be, Miss Bower.â Gomez had come striding out onto the deck. He bowed toward the young woman. âWeâve never met, señorita , but no doubt youâve heard of me. Sid Gomez, Jakeâs partner and well-known ace detective in my own right.â
Eyeing him, Jake inquired, âYou just happen to be passing by, too?â
