lecture about the importance of spotting and balance. Instead, she helped Gracie to her feet and suggested she picture her favorite gymnast, Gabby Douglas, standing in the front of the room. âLook right into Gabbyâs eyes,â she told her. âConcentrate on that one spot.â It took Gracie about a dozen tries to get it right, and when she did, Miss Toni high-fived her.
âNone of us get any sympathy if we fall on our butts,â Scarlett said. âMuch less a high five. I donât get it. Why is Gracie always the favorite?â
Rochelle shrugged. â âCause sheâs younger. The first time my baby brother, Dylan, pooped in his diaper, my mom and dad jumped for joy and told him he was a genius. All he did was poop!â
âLittle kids always get more attentionâthatâs just how it is,â Bria added.
âYouâre a little sister. I donât see you behaving like that and driving your sister up the wall,â Scarlett pointed out.
âThatâs because my sister
is
a geniusâand I donât mean at pooping.â Bria laughed. âI always feel like I have to compete with her. Maybe thatâs how Gracie feels around you.â
Scarlett thought it over. That might have been the case a few months ago, when she was winning trophies for dance. But now they were both Divas, dancing on the same team, and Gracie was getting better by the day. It had been Scarlettâs idea to ask Miss Toni to let Gracie join the teamâher tumbling was pretty awesome after all. Had she created a monster?
âWhat do you always tell me when Liberty is making me nuts?â Rochelle asked her.
Scarlett recalled the last time she had to seriously referee her teammates. Liberty decided that Rochelleâs jazz shoes âneeded freshening.â So she put them outside on the windowsill during a torrential downpour. When Rochelle found them, they were a soggy mess and the soles were falling off.
âI think I told her she should mind her own shoe business?â Scarlett said. âAnd I believe I stopped you from sticking her head under the faucet as payback?â
Rochelle nodded. âI still say her face needed freshening ⦠but I saw your point. Two wrongs donât make a right.â
Scarlett nodded. âSo youâre saying I should forget the whole Mr. Mustard thing and move on?â
Bria pointed to the clock. âWe all need to moveâfive minutes till rehearsal!â
Chapter 4
Monkey See, Monkey Do
The girls rushed into the studio the next day and began stretching. Gracie squeezed in beside Scarlett at the
barre
. âI told Miss Toni and she loves the name Mr. Mustard,â she whispered. âShe said it was really cute and clever.â
Scarlett gritted her teeth and tried to focus on her cambre back . Maybe if she ignored Gracie, sheâd go away and stop bugging her.
âOkay, time to talk Dance Fusion,â Toni said, taking her place on a tall stool at the front of the room. âThis is a big competition in Connecticut, and I want to pull out all the stops.â
âWhat else is new?â Rochelle muttered under her breath.
âRochelle and Liberty,â Toni said, âI am putting you two together in a duet.â
Libertyâs face went pale. âA duet? With
her
?
Again?
â
âIs there a problem? Because Iâm happy to give Rochelle a solo if youâre not up for it,â Toni said, warning her.
âFine,â Liberty grumped. âIâll do it.â She turned to Rochelle. âIâm not about to let you have a solo.â
âItâs called âGoing Bananas,â â Toni continued. âItâs an acro routine and youâre going to wear this.â She tossed Rochelle a bright yellow leotard.
âOMG, that is hideous!â Liberty said. âIâll look like a giant highlighter pen!â
âOh no. Thatâs not your costume,â
