their coach replied. âThis is yours.â She handed Liberty a brown, fuzzy unitard with a long tail attached.
Libertyâs face turned bright red. Scarlettactually thought she saw steam coming out of her ears. âNo way! I am not making a fool out of myself in that!â
âWhatâs the matter?â Rochelle taunted her. âAfraid of a little monkey business on the dance floor?â
âThis is going to get ugly.â Anya sighed. âI can see it coming.â
âI refuse to wear thisâand to dance with that,â Liberty fumed. âIâm gonna tell my mother. She will never stand for it.â
Toni stayed cool as a cucumber. âThen take a seat, Liberty,â she said calmly. âIn the corner, on the mat. No one is forcing you to dance on the Divas team.â
She turned back to the class. âBria and Anya, youâre also doing a duet. Itâs a lyrical routine called âCount the Stars,â and Iâm going to need your moms to help with the costuming.â
âMy momâs totally into it,â Bria volunteered. âSheâs a whiz at BeDazzling.â
Anya wrinkled her nose. âBeDazzling? I wasthinking more simple and classic like the night sky â¦â
Toni held up her hand. âGirls, the costumes are the least of my concerns at the moment. We need to block out the group routine today.â
She went to the closet and pulled out a large inflated beach ball. She tossed it to Scarlett. âI call this number âBy the Beautiful Sea.â Youâre all going to be 1920s bathing beauties frolicking on the seashore.â
Gracieâs hand went up. âMiss Toni, can I be the one in the bathtub?â she asked, hopefully.
Scarlett sighed. âGracie, there is no bathtub. Itâs set on the beach.â
âIn hideously ugly costumes with bloomers,â Liberty piped up from the corner. âAs if the monkey suit wasnât bad enough.â
Miss Toni ignored the chatter. âIâve found real vintage bathing suits for all of youâand parasols and bathing caps.â
She held up a black-and-white photo of a woman in a navy-and-white striped skirted bathing suitwith baggy white bloomers peeking out from underneath.
Gracie stared at the image. âI donât get it. Howâs she gonna swim in that? Canât we just wear bikinis?â
Libertyâs hand shot up. âI second bikinis!â
Scarlett actually thought she heard Toni growl. âI have had enough of all of you today,â she said firmly. âThe only voice I want to hear now is my own. Is that clear?â
Six heads nodded in unison. Toni meant business.
âI want two lines of three. Scarlett, Gracie, Rochelle. Youâre up front. Anya, Bria, youâre in the back. And Liberty, too ⦠if you care to grace us with your presence?â
Liberty stood up and took her place in line.
âThis number is nostalgic. It will be light and lively with lots of kicks and tricks. I want the judges to be wowed from the minute you set foot onstage.â
She motioned for Scarlett to toss her thebeach ball. âThis is going to be in constant motion during the routine, passing from hand to hand.â She tossed it at Rochelle, who was caught off guard and nearly dropped it.
âAnyone who is not on the ball for this group number will have me to deal with.â
Rochelle wasnât sure that Liberty would show up for their duet rehearsal the next day. She could have kissed Miss Toni for making Liberty the monkey instead of her. How funny would she look jumping around onstage and shaking her tail?
When Liberty walked into the studio, Rock had to try her hardest not to crack up. She knew Toni wouldnât tolerate it.
âOh, so youâve decided to join us?â Toni asked Liberty. âIf youâre going to do this duet, I donât want any complainingânot about your dance, not about your
