Mallory thought the huge man was going to start crying in earnest. Instead, Brody stifled a sob and left the office.
âWhat did you think?â asked Mallory.
âThe man clearly has an unhealthy relationship with his dragon,â replied Periwinkle. âBy next month you'll be asking for movies of them together.â
âWhat useful did you think?â said Mallory wearily.
âI think he looks silly in buckskins.â
Mallory turned to Felina. âI don't suppose there's much sense asking you for an opinion.â
âSure there is, John Justin,â she said.
âOkay, I'm asking.â
âWhat's an opinion?â
âForget it.â
âI can't until you tell me what it is.â
âIt's just like a Turkish cigarette, only different,â said Mallory.
Felina smiled. âGood. Now I can forget it.â
âForget what?â asked Winnifred Carruthers, entering the office and kicking off her galoshes.
âI don't remember,â said Felina.
âIt's starting to snow out, John Justin,â said Winnifred, hanging up her overcoat. âI thought maybe I'd make a pot of tea to warm me up before I walk the rest of the way to my apartment.â
âYou're not going to your apartment,â said Mallory.
âI'm not?â
âNo. I'd planned to take you out for dinner, but we just picked up a job.â
âWhat kind?â
He told her about Brody and showed her the wad of hundreds. âWe got about twenty-two hours to find the dragon if we want that bonus.â
âThe case is solved,â announced Winnifred. âDo we have to return Fluffy to get the bonus, or merely tell this Brody where she is?â
âHe's paying us to bring her back to him.â
âThen the case is solved and there's no bonus.â
âI don't suppose you'd care to explain that?â asked Mallory.
âDon't you read anything but the Racing Form , John Justin?â said Winnifred.
âHe reads all those men's magazines he has hidden in the bottom drawer of his desk,â offered Periwinkle helpfully. âWell, he looks at the pictures, anyway.â
âIf everyone's through dumping on me, perhaps my partner can tell me how we solved the case and lost our bonus less than five minutes after I accepted the damned job?â
âFluffy is the favorite for Eastminster,â began Winnifred.
âI know that.â
âCan you guess who owns the second choice?â
There was a momentary silence.
âPlease don't tell me what I know you're going to tell me,â said Mallory.
Winnifred smiled grimly. âYou guessed.â

âWell,â said Mallory, âI suppose the next step is to see if he's really got the dragon.â
âHe's the most powerful demon on the East Coast,â said Winnifred. âAre you sure you wouldn't rather just return our retainer?â
âWe'd be setting an unacceptable precedent,â replied Mallory.
âBut you're talking about the Grundy !â
âHe and I are old friends.â
âYou're mortal enemies,â Winnifred corrected him.
âThat too,â admitted Mallory. âYou're sure he has the second choice?â
âA chimera, yes,â said Winnifred. âIt won here last year, before the dragon had begun showing.â
âWell, I might as well get it over with,â said Mallory, picking up the phone. âYou want to leave?â
âNo,â said Winnifred. âWe're partners. I won't desert you, John Justin.â
â I'd like to leave,â offered Periwinkle.
âYou're part of the furnishings,â said Mallory. He turned to Felina. âHow about you? Everyone else has voiced an opinion.â
âWill he tear you limb from limb, pluck your eyes out, cut off your head, and make a stylish jacket out of your skin?â she asked.
Mallory shrugged. âHe might.â
âThen
