for food,” he said as he took an exit. It was
a truck stop and I wasn’t exactly excited about the place. I was suddenly not
really that hungry.
“I’ll
wait in the car,” I said quietly.
“Ya
not going to happen. I hear you have a tendency to run away; and I am under
strict orders not to let you out of my sight,” he said grinning. He parked and
climbed out. He walked over to my side and opened my door.
“I
can’t believe you are going to eat here,” I muttered as I climbed out of the
car. It felt good to stretch my legs.
He
wrapped his arm around my waist and led me toward the entrance. “Some of the
best food in the world is at these little hole in the wall places.”
I
pulled away from him once we were inside. “I am going to the bathroom,” I said
as I walked toward the ladies room. I couldn’t shake my annoyed mood no matter
how hard I tried.
When
I walked back out I spotted him in a booth. He was flirting with the waitress.
I rolled my eyes and walked over to his booth and slid in the seat across from
him. The waitress looked at me then at my belly.
“He’s
a skank, I wouldn’t mess with him,” I said and smiled.
She
looked at him a little horrified then smiled nervously. “I’ll be right back
with your order,” she said and hurried off.
He
scowled at me. “Really, you are going to cock block me after all I am doing for
you?”
I
smiled. “She already made her mind up when she saw my belly. I just went with
it,” I said amused.
He
smiled. “Ok, I’ll take the credit for knocking you up. You are hot enough.”
I
scowled. “You’re a pig.”
“You
will be surprised at how many women dig guys with pregnant girlfriends,” he
said playfully.
I
rolled my eyes. “Whatever. Where are we going anyway?”
“I
am not telling you. It is safer that way.” He sounded like he was trying to
annoy me again.
I
was about to protest, but the waitress came back with his order. He was
grinning as she made a point to lean over him to get him a napkin. She giggled
at everything he said. It was actually extremely annoying. “I’ll be in the
car,” I muttered as I stood.
He
glanced at me and winked. I just rolled my eyes and walked out. I really wasn’t
in the mood for him.
The
cool air hit my face and I relaxed a little. It was perfect outside. It wasn’t
too cold and it wasn’t too hot. I walked back toward Damon’s car. I was worried
about Brayden, Dominic, and Micah. I knew they would be worried about me. If
Maggie thought it was best then maybe they would understand.
A
scuffing noise to my right caught my attention. It was a wolf, one I didn’t
recognize. He was a huge, beautiful gray wolf. He just stood there watching me.
He didn’t look angry or hostile; if anything he looked curious. I was kind of
curious about him. There was something about him that made me trust him. It was
an odd sensation, and I tried to shake it off.
Damon
suddenly tackled the wolf and threw the wolf into a parked car. Damon scrambled
to his feet. He ran to me and grabbed my hand. I wanted to argue as he was
pulling me along behind him, but everything was happening so fast I didn’t get
a chance. He opened the driver’s door and pushed me inside. He climbed in the
seat as soon as I was in. As he pulled away I turned trying to see the wolf,
but he had disappeared.
“Who
was that?” I asked trying to catch my breath.
“One
of Elijah’s crew I am sure,” Damon said as he watched the rearview mirror. He
was on guard now. He was no longer the irritating playful Damon. “You ok?” He
looked me over like he expected me to be injured.
I
nodded. “He never touched me. Who is Elijah? Everyone is talking about him, but
no one will tell me anything.” I was trying to sound calm and collected, but I
was getting irritated with the lack of information. I didn’t think that wolf meant
me any harm. I really didn’t think he had anything to do with Elijah or anyone
trying to hurt me. He could have
