can make us wiggle. Something to make us jiggle. We need something that pops! Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop! You know what pop is backwards? Pop!â
Nico knew his friend was right. âNext!â he barked, hoping greatness would walk through the door.
It was the spoonbill. He wiped the drool off himself. âEw, disgusting. Gentlemen, Iâm yourââ
âWhoa!â Blu slipped in a puddle of Luizâs drool and slid into the spoonbill. Crash! Blu and the spoonbill untangled themselves. The spoonbill flew up and landed on the hood of a car, away from the commotion. He looked irritated.
âSorry bro!â Luiz said, indicating the puddle of drool the macaw had slipped in.
âItâs okay, Luiz,â Blu said. âGood to see you too.â
Pedro faced his friend. âListen, Blu, weâre looking for a singer, a dancer . . . the whole package.â
âYeah, and youâre more of a mumbler-shuffler,â Nico told him. âYou catch my drift?â
âOh, no, no,â Blu said quickly. âIâm not here to audition. Iâve got news. I am going to the Amazon. Yay . . .â
Nico looked confused. âAmaâwhat?â
Rafael motioned for a break. âOooh, okay. Uhh, letâs take five.â
The spoonbill was frustrated. âWhat?â he shouted, stomping his foot. The hood of the car he was on popped open and slammed him in the face.
Â
Blu and his buddies gathered on the garage rooftop, and he laid out his plan: he and Jewel were taking the kids to the Amazon so they could learn to live like real birds.
âThe Amazon.â Luiz whistled, shaking his head in amazement. âWow. Thatâs wild.â
Blu took a deep breath. âYeah, yeah. Jewel thinks itâll be good for us.â Then he paused. âUhhh, how . . . how wild?â
âReal wild,â Luiz said.
âThey got mosquitoes that suck your blood like Slurpees,â Pedro said, dropping his voice.
Nico nodded. âSnakes that can swallow you whole.â
Luiz stared off into space. âFlesh-eating piranhas that eat . . . flesh,â he whispered.
None of this was making Blu feel good about the decision. âOh, great. That sounds really nice,â he said sarcastically. He let out a shiver. âIâm not going.â
Rafael stepped forward, holding out his wings. âGuys, guys, guys,â he said, shushing them. âBlu, you have nothing to worry about. All those stories are highly exaggerated.â
Blu gave him a dubious look. âYou think so?â
âOf course,â Rafael assured him. âIf this is important to Jewel, just do it.â He winked. âHappy wife, happy life. Remember that.â
Happy wife, happy life , Blu repeated to himself, trying to rally his spirits. âOkay, yeah, youâre right,â he said. âYou know, a little family vacation . . . might actually be fun,â he went on, trying to convince himself. âPlus, itâs not like itâs forever.â
Rafael clapped him hard on the back. âThatâs the spirit!â
âYeah. Okay, thanks guys,â Blu said, nodding as he spoke. Heâd managed to talk himself into it. He tried to put on a brave smile as he flew off. âSee you in a couple of weeks!â
âSafe travels, Blu!â Rafael called after him.
âBring me back a souvenir!â Luiz urged as Blu disappeared from view.
Rafael sighed. âHeâs dead.â
Nico shrugged. âToo bad. Nice guy.â
Rafael gazed into the horizon where Blu had flown off. Pedro and Nicoâs words worried him because he knew there was some truth to them.
Blu didnât know the first thing about living in the wild. But Rafael thought there was a way he could help. . . .
