Whoa, whoa,â Blu put his wings up. Now she was getting ahead of herself. âWe canât just pack up and go.â
âWhy not?â Jewel asked. âItâs about time this family got a little air under our wings.â She zoomed in the air toward the startled kids, snatching away their gadgets. âLook at us! iPods. TV! Pancakes! Weâre not people. Weâre birds .â
âHey!â Carla cried as her iPod was ripped from her talons.
âMom!â Bia and Tiago exclaimed as their mother flew around the room, a bird on a mission.
âWe have to get out to the wild and be birds, Blu!â she told her husband, zooming over to him. âLet the kids connect to their roots. Show them what I had.â
There was a spark in Jewelâs eyes that Blu had never seen before. âThey need this,â Jewel went on, passionate. â We need this. Come on, Blu. What do you say?â
He hesitated. âI donât know. Maybe . . . uhhh . . .â
âHe didnât say no!â Carla exclaimed.
âWhich means he practically said yes!â Bia added excitedly.
Things were moving too fast. âHey. Wait a secondââ
âItâs gonna be so much fun!â Jewel exclaimed.
Tiago did a wing pump. âYeahhhhhh! Weâre going to the Amazo n !â Then he looked at his parents. âWhatâs the Amazon?â
Chapter 3
E very year, Nico and Pedro put on an incredible show for Carnaval. And every year, everyone wanted to be a part of it. This year was no exception.
A long line of birds sat perched on the telephone wires outside Luizâs garage. Pigeons and parakeets, doves and hummingbirds and cuckoos all mingled together, doing vocal exercises and getting ready for their moment to shine.
âNext!â Luiz called. He was working the entrance door. A tall, long-legged spoonbill confidently looked at the other contenders.
âThat would be me,â he said cockily. âOkay, everyone can go home now. Youâre looking at the next King of Carnaval!â
He flew through the door and landed next to Luiz.
âHey, big bird, break a leg!â Luiz said encouragingly. As the bird walked inside, he slipped on Luizâs drool and fell down.
Luiz winced. âOoooh! Walk it off, buddy!â
Â
It was audition time, and Eva had just finished belting out a rousing song. From the judgeâs table, Nico and Pedro stared at her openmouthed. Rafael was hanging on every note. Rafael smiled and clapped energetically. Then he flew over to her side.
âBravo! Bravo! Bravo! That was amazing! Eva, darling, you hit every note!â He turned to look at Nico and Pedro. âHuh, guys?â
âYeah, yeah, with a bunch of notes I never heard of,â Pedro muttered under his breath.
Eva was looking eagerly at the judges. âSo, am I going to be in your Carnaval production this year? Hmmm?â
Nico and Pedro looked at each other. Neither of them knew what to say.
Pedro spoke first. âYeah, yeah, weâll get back to you,â he told her.
âUh, Rafael has your contact info, right?â Nico asked.
Eva sensed that they werenât being truthful with her. âRaffi!â She turned to her husband for help. He ushered her out.
âDonât worry,â he assured her as she glared at him. âIâll talk to them. Weâll find the perfect spot for you.â
âIn Ecuador, maybe,â Nico mumbled.
âYou better,â Eva said to Rafael threateningly. Then she turned back to Nico and Pedro. âCiao, ciao. Bye, boys!â And with a wave, the opera-singing toucan flew off.
âSee you back at home, my tasty mango!â Rafael called after her.
Nico sighed. âNone of the acts are inspiring. Iâm just not inspired. Carnaval is right around the corner and our reputations are on the line.â
âCopy that,â Pedro agreed. âWe need something that
