Cotswolds with Myrtle had been cancelled, had to agree that Georgeâs plan was smart.
âItâs not just smart, itâs genius,â Myrtle said. âWe can save the shop and carry on as before.â She leaned back in her chair and caressed the spines of the Encyclopedia Britannica . âThe Friends of England can go on indefinitely.â
âFor as long as the funds hold up, at any rate,â George said. âWeâve been sensible up to now. Letâs keep it like that.â
George had to be respected. His wise, restraining advice had allowed the three of them to enjoy a comfortable retirement that might yet continue. If the truth were told, the Friends of England Society was a mutual benefit club. George and Edward had once been members of Butch Raffertyâs gang and they were still living off the spoils of a security van heist.
âMy dear old Butch would love this plan,â Myrtle said with a faraway look. âI can hear him saying, âSimple ainât always obvious.ââ
âIf Butch hadnât messed up, we wouldnât be here,â Edward said, still moody. âWeâd be back in New York City, living in style.â
âDonât kid yourself,â Myrtle said. âYouâd have gambled away your share inside six months. New York, maybeâbut by now youâd be sleeping rough in Central Park. I know you better than you know yourself, Edward.â
âThere are worse places than Central Park,â he said. âIâve had it up to here with Poketown, Pennsylvania. We should have got outta here years ago.â
âOh, come on.â
âItâs only because we live in Pennsylvania that my plan will work,â George said.
Edwardâs lip curled. âIt had better work.â
âAnd Iâm thinking we should bring Tanya in at an early stage,â George said.
âNo way,â Edward said. âWhat is it with Tanya? You got something going with her?â
âHow ridiculous. Youâre the one who canât keep his eyes off her.â
Myrtle said, âLeave it, George. Act your age, both of you. Iâm with Edward here. Keep it to ourselves.â
Edward almost purred. âSomething else Butch once said: âThe more snouts in the trough, the less you get.ââ
âAs you wish,â George said. âWe wonât say anything to Tanya. Sheâll get a beautiful surprise.â
âSo how do we divide the work?â Myrtle said.
âUnless you think otherwise, I volunteer to do the paperwork,â George said. âIâm comfortable with the English language.â
âKeep it short and simple. Nothing fancy.â
âIs that agreed, then?â
Edward agreed with a shrug.
âBut we should all join in,â Myrtle said.âAnother thing Butch said, âEveryone must get their hands dirty.ââ
âSuits meâbut what else is there to do?â Edward said.
âI need one of Robertâs credit cards,â George said.
Edward shook his head. âThe hell you do. Weâre not going down that route. Thatâs a sure way to get found out.â
George took a sharp, impatient breath. âWe wonât be using it to buy stuff.â
âSo what do we want it for?â Edward said, and immediately knew the answer. âThe signature on the back.â
âRight,â Myrtle said. âCan you take care of that?â
âTricky,â Edward said.
âNot at all. Robert must have used plastic. Everyone does.â
âHow do we get hold of one?â
âHow do you get hold of one,â Myrtle said. âThatâs how you get your hands dirty. My guess is theyâre still lying around the office somewhere.â
âTanyaâs always in there.â
Myrtle rolled her eyes. âGod help us, Edward, if you canât find a way to do this simple thing you donât deserve to be one of
