Seeing that she looked good, Treasure waited on Bright’s response.
“She said she was,” Bright remembered. “Just grab her up on your way over here, and hurry up. Larry should be here any minute, and I don't wanna hold him up too long,” Bright said.
“Here I come,” Treasure said, before hanging up the phone. On her way down the street, Treasure ran into Suge coming up her block. Once Suge apologized for being late, both girls rushed down the street and to the corner store before Larry Lane got there.
While the girls were talking, Larry Lane pulled up in a Ford minivan full of guys. The girls began to look sideways at the van and mumbled amongst themselves about the type of vehicle he was driving. Bright could have sworn he was riding in a Mustang when he pushed up on her. However, because he had a promising future ahead of himself and he was just a college student, Bright decided she wouldn't diss him too hard. But she did want to know what happened to his car.
“Let’s just make the best of the night,” Bright quickly said to her girls before Larry was in earshot.
Replacing their mugs with pleasant smiles, they agreed, and then climbed in the van after Larry parked and unlocked the doors for them to get in. Seeing Larry's handsome face put a big smile on Bright’s face. He was tall, dark, and handsome, and it was his winning smile that won Bright over the day he had pulled over and asked her for her number.
Larry didn't have much money, nor did he pretend to. He had come from a family full of hard workers, and when he got accepted to UCLA they all came together and purchased him his dream car just as they had done with others in the family before him.
“Where yo ride at, Larry?” Bright asked after getting comfortable in the passenger seat.
“It's in the paint shop. I'm changing my blue paint to yellow,” he said, looking into her sexy green eyes.
“Sounds good to me,” Bright said, blushing from the way Larry was looking at her.
“And you gone look good riding in it too, wit yo fine ass!”
Larry told her, pulling out of the store parking lot.
Bright smiled, “Well good, cause this old van is not with the business!” she teased. Larry laughed, and then they continued to laugh and talk until they reached his house.
Over at Larry's house in Westwood a city right below Beverly Hills, Bright wasn't impressed at all. His house was everything that she expected it not to be. It was an average-sized three bedroom house. His mother and sister Linda had their own bedroom and Larry and his brother Desmond shared a room. The furniture was nothing to brag on, but they did have a nice big screen TV in the living room. Their house was immaculate, and it was much cleaner than Bright's three bedroom apartment. Their kitchen sink stayed full of dirty dishes, the kitchen and bathroom floors were hardly ever mopped, and dirty clothes were scattered throughout the apartment. To top it off, their apartment smelled like the excessive beer and cigarettes that her mother faithfully drank and smoked after a long day’s work. Bright was, to say the least, extremely embarrassed about their filthy Section 8 apartment, and it was the reason she never invited anybody over, including her best friend Treasure. And although Bright could have helped out more around the house, she came up with one excuse after another, when her mother would be on her head about cleaning.
“Ma, why do I always have to do everything around here?” Bright would always complain. However, the only thing she was worried or concerned about was herself, her gear, how good she looked, and keeping up with (NWM) niggas with money.
Though the kickback at Larry's house was nothing like Bright had expected it to be, or even worth the outfit she was wearing, Larry was doing a good job entertaining and keeping her interested. Larry was different from the other guys that Bright messed with. He was goofy and very playful, but in a way of trying to impress her. And
