Earth, don’t you think?”
Kari sat up in his lap and looked around. “Oh,” she said in a breathy voice.
He smiled down at the girl in his arms. Her lashes were heavy with tears, and the moisture caught a glint of light from the stars above. Her lips were red and swollen from crying. Soon they would be red from his kisses.
“It would have killed me, like they were killed, if you hadn’t—”
“Yes, but let’s not think of that. You are safe for now. You can rest.” He pulled her tight against him, and dropped his hands to her back, molding her softness against him.
“For now?” her voice took on a squeaky tone of panic. “You mean it will come after me again?”
Rahmiel gathered her tightly into his arms to soothe her and smiled over her shoulder as she snuggled into his embrace and tucked her face into his neck. She was moving toward his plan so predictably. Perfect.
He stroked her back with a slow, sensuous hand, lingering in the small of her back, gently massaging her skin. He felt her small movement, as she pressed herself into his hand. Unconsciously, perhaps, but it indicated a passionate nature. He would enjoy that. Even now his manhood was straining against the soft leggings he wore, twitching in pleasure every time she moved.
This was all turning out so well.
Kari shivered and pressed closer to him. “Keep me safe,” she whispered, and her breath against his neck made him shiver. “I keep thinking about that bony hand sticking out of me.”
“I’ll keep you safe,” he assured her, stroking her long silky hair from crown down to her tiny waist and a little farther.
“You will kill it when it comes for me again?” Now he could feel her lips brush against his neck as she spoke, and tiny thrills ran through him.
“I will fight it. I’m not sure I can kill it, but I have defeated it before, and caused it to go into hiding, keeping people safe for many long years. I can keep you safe.”
She sighed and nuzzled her face deeper into the curve of his neck.
“There is another thing we can do,” he said softly.
“To keep me safe, you mean?”
          “Yes.”
She sat back a bit and looked into his face. Her eyes were open wide, and he looked deep into the light green pools.
“It is a binding, a thing that Angels can do. It would make an energy shield wrap around you, and through you, inside you. One that the demon cannot penetrate.”
“So it couldn’t stick its hand through me?” Her eyes opened, wide and hopeful.
“Yes.” He bit his lip for a moment. “You are so thin now, I’m afraid even one slice from him might be too much for you. I don’t know if I can be quick enough.”
He dropped his eyes. He didn’t want to seem too eager. Best to go slow, let her think it was her idea.
“But can you do this?” Kari asked. “It sounds like just what I need to stay safe from
          —that thing.”
“Oh, yes. But you may not want to do it. It requires us to perform the most intimate act between a man and a woman.”
Her cheeks turned bright pink. “You mean sex?”
“Yes.” He brushed her hair with slow sensual strokes and felt her shiver beneath his fingers. There was no doubt she was attracted to him. But then, most humans were attracted to Angeli. “Have you had sex before, little Kari? Have you given yourself to a man?”
“No,” she squeaked. “I know it’s odd for a girl my age, but I haven’t dated much.
I’ve never had a real boyfriend, and I didn’t want to do it with just anybody.”
She sounded a little defensive about being a virgin. How the world had changed.
“And then my dad died so I moved back home to keep Mom company. I had to commute to classes, but I stayed home with Mom every
