herself, and you are part of the pack, you need to respect their traditions. Not being with Ian, or moving to a new area were both non-options as far as she was concerned.
"So what is it? Why did you come barrelling like a madman earlier?"
He frowned, and ran a hand through his dark hair. "I need you to stay out of the woods, unless you're with me."
Huh? Out of the woods? There was a clearing, by the water that she'd been going to virtually every day since she was nine, roughly a quarter of a mile from her house. It was the one place in the world she felt truly at ease. Not going there was unimaginable to her.
"But what about my walks to the clearing?"
"You wait until I get home from work and go with me then."
"But it's the woods. I've grown up here. The pack is here. Why wouldn't you want me going by myself?" Adrianna's eyes caught his and she could see genuine concern and a sliver of fear in them.
"I have a feeling Adrianna." He took her hand and brought it to his mouth, kissing her palm tenderly. "You need to trust me."
"I do."
"Then stay out of the woods."
Despite the concern he had for her, she still couldn't let his explanation remain so vague. She needed more. "Why Ian? Tell me why or I'll do what I please."
He growled softly, making her smile.
"Stop scowling," she scolded.
His expression softened and he chuckled softly. "Alright. I saw a cougar on the road on my way home."
"So? Cougars come around from time to time. I'm not nine anymore," she joked, her mind rushing back to the day he'd saved her from a cougar who was intent on making her little body its dinner when she was a child. That was the day he'd imprinted on her, and for the next ten years put it upon himself to become her guardian and protector. She knew he had the best intentions, but he could be way too overprotective at times.
"No Adrianna. Something didn't seem right. It stared at me."
Adrianna had to stifle a joke, his expression was too intense for him to appreciate any attempt to make light of his encounter. "But Ian... So it got spooked by the headlights of the Jeep and froze."
"I had to fight the urge to turn Adrianna. The wolf in me wanted to kill it. Chase it down and rip it to shreds. I haven't felt such an intense urge since that day when you were nine."
The intensity in his gaze and the conviction in his tone sent a shiver through Adrianna.
If he was trying to seriously spook her, he'd achieved his objective.
"Well... Okay..."
"Do you swear it Adrianna?"
She nodded.
"I want to hear you say the words. Swear to me. Not until the pack fully investigates the area and determines it's safe."
"I promise Ian. I won't go any further than the barn."
He shook his head, slipping his arm around her waist and pulling her tighter. "Not even the barn Addy."
"But the animals need to be fed, the horses, the stalls..."
"I'll get up early and do it before I go to work in the morning."
She opened her mouth to protest and snapped it shut. The look in his eyes told her it wasn't up for negotiation. She melted against him and nuzzled the side of his neck. His intensity was scaring her. He was holding something back, she could feel it, but she didn't want to press him.
"I promise Ian," she whispered against his neck.
His body relaxed under her and he place a kiss at her temple. "Thank you."
Adrianna nodded, trying to push back the feelings of uneasiness he had stirred up within her.
He ran his fingers through her hair, from her scalp to the tip, letting the soft strands slip from his fingertips. The soft tug sent a pleasurable shiver through her, making her moan softly. He continued to stroke her hair, until her exhaustion got the better of her and she drifted off to sleep in his arms.
Chapter 3
Adrianna awoke to find Ian's side of the bed cold and empty and the sound of a
banging coming from outside her back bedroom window. Looking to her left, to the clock on her night table, she was shocked to see it was past noon. She never slept
