over the past two daysâ¦â
âDribbles and drips,â Hannah interrupted, laughing. âYour Pennsylvania Dutch country origins are showing.â
âWhatever.â Maggie shrugged. âAnyway, theyâre here. Mitchâs parents, two brothers, one alone, one with his family, and his sister. Youâllmeet them Friday evening at the rehearsal, and get to know them a little at dinner afterward.â
âDinner?â Hannah swept the room with a skeptical glance. âWhere?â
âMitch made arrangements for dinner at the Bullock Hotel.â
âOh.â Naturally, Hannah hadnât a clue where the Bullock Hotel might be located, but it didnât matter. âAnd is that when Iâll meet your Mitch?â Now, that did matter, a lot. She had witnessed the hurt and humiliation inflicted on Maggie by her former fiancé. Hannah had never been able to bring herself to trust or like the too-smooth Todd. Subsequently, to her dismay, her suspicions about him had proved correct.
âNo.â Maggie shook her head. âYouâll meet Mitch tonight. Heâs going to stop by later. Though heâs eager to meet youâIâve told him so much about youâhe wanted to give us some time alone together, to catch up.â Her eyes softened. âHeâs so considerate.â
Hmm, Iâll be the judge of that, Hannah mused. But it sure sounded like Maggie did have it bad. âHow does it really feel? Being in love, I mean?â
âAll the things I mentioned beforeâ¦and perhaps a little scary, too.â
âScary?â Hannah was at once alert, her protective instincts quivering. Was this Mitch Grainger a bully? She couldnât imagine her independent friend falling for a man who would intimidate her, but then again, Maggie had been about to marry that deceitful jerk Todd.
âWell, maybe not exactly scary,â Maggie said, after giving it some thought. âItâs all so new and sudden, and almost too exciting, too thrilling. You know how love is.â
Whoa, Hannah thought, serious stuff hereâ¦. Too exciting? Too thrilling? Now she really couldnât wait to meet the man. âActually, no,â she admitted, wryly. âI donât know.â
Maggie blinked in astonishment. âYouâre kidding.â
âNo, Iâm not.â
âYouâve never been in love? What about that guy you dated in college?â
âOh, I thought I was in love,â Hannah said. âTurned out it was a combination of chemistry and itchy hormones, commonly called lust.â Her tone was dry, her smile self derisive.
âButâ¦since thenâ¦?â Maggie persisted.
âNope.â Hannah swallowed the last of the chocolate; it had gone as cold as her love lifeâ¦or lack of same. âThere were a couple of infatuations, some sexual activity, but not much. There was one brief and I thought promising relationship I never told you about. But it really never got off square one, so to speak.â She shrugged. âNothing even remotely resembling what youâve described.â
âOh, too bad. All this time weâve known each other, and I never knew, never even guessedâ¦youâve always been so closemouthed about your personal life.â
Hannah laughed. âThatâs because I didnât have one, at least nothing that warranted discussion.â
âI never imaginedâ¦â Maggie sighed, then brightened. âOh, I canât wait for you to fall in love someday, experience this excitingly scary champagne-bubbly feeling.â
âIâm not sure I want to.â Hannah slowly moved her head back and forth.
âNot want to?â Maggie exclaimed, surprised. âButâ¦why not?â
âBecauseâ¦â Hannah hesitated, carefully choosing her words so as not to offend her friend by voicing doubt. âI donât think I want to expose myself to that
