that man with the big mustache?â Benny asked.
âHe was dressed in overalls,â Violet said. âIâll bet he doesnât work in an office.â
âThe city is full of all kinds of jobs,â Jessie said.
âHe looked like a railroad engineer,â Henry added.
Just then they saw Chad outside. He stopped to talk to the doorman.
âLetâs go.â Henry stood up and started for the door.
âHeâs going away!â Benny observed as Chad hurried out of sight.
The doorman came in. âYou must be the Aldens,â he said, smiling. âIâm Willard. I have a message for you.â
âFrom Chad?â Henry asked.
Willard nodded. âHe says heâll be with you shortly. He had an errand down the street.â He started away. âOh, I almost forgot,â he said, turning back. âThis is for you, too.â He handed Henry an envelope and went back outside.
âWhoâs that from?â Benny asked.
Henry studied the envelope. âIt doesnât say.â
âItâs probably from Chad,â Violet decided.
Henry opened the envelope and took out a piece of paper. âThis is odd,â he said, and he began to read the note aloud.
In this city
Thereâs lots to do.
Follow my lead
To each new clue .
And when youâve seen
All the rest ,
Youâll find the treasure
That is best .
NOTE WELL: DONâT TELL!
âDonât tell what , Henry?â Benny asked.
Henry shrugged. âI donât know. About the note, maybe, or ⦠Thereâs a clue on the bottom. Maybe thatâs it.â
âA clue? What kind of clue?â Jessie said.
Henry read on:
CLUE #1
Find a structure
Straight and tall
Standing there
Through fire and all .
They drifted back to the bench and sat down. They were full of questions. What did this note mean? Who had written it? Why was it given to them? What was the special treasure the note mentioned?
âChad wrote the note,â Jessie decided.
âBut why?â Henry wondered.
âLetâs ask him,â Benny said.
âThe note says, âDonât tell,ââ Violet reminded him.
Benny was puzzled. âBut if Chad wrote it, he already knows about it.â
âYouâre right, Benny,â Henry said, âbut if he did write it, he doesnât want us to know he did.â
âItâs some kind of game â a treasure hunt,â Jessie said. âWe should just go along with it.â
âThen weâd better figure out the clue,â Henry concluded. He reread it.
âA structure â is that a building?â Benny asked.
Henry nodded. âIt could be a building. But there are other kinds of structures.â
âLetâs say itâs a building, Henry,â Jessie suggested.
âOkay. A building â straight and tall ââ
âThereâs Chad!â Benny said.
This time Chad came inside. âSorry Iâm late,â he said. âI hope you werenât bored.â
Henry stuffed the note into his pocket. âActually, we were busy ⦠figuring things out,â he said.
The Aldens all watched Chad. If he had written the note, he would know they had been trying to figure out the clue. His reaction would give him away.
Chad did not react. Instead, he said, âLetâs get moving!â and sailed through the doors with the Aldens at his heels.
Chad led the way along the broad sidewalks. âI hope you like to walk,â he said.
Benny looked at the tall buildings and the busy streets. âWhere are we going?â he asked.
âTo the Water Tower,â Chad answered. âItâs not far.â
âWhatâs at the Water Tower?â Violet asked.
âLong ago it contained instruments to measure water pumped from Lake Michigan. Now itâs a visitorsâ center,â Chad said. âWe can get information and maps there.â
âThe Water
