because of Keith, even though she liked him okay. But because of the guy sitting next to him.
Jeremy, Taniaâs new stepbrother.
Tall and lanky, Jeremy leaned his elbows on his knees and stared down at the platform. His curly chestnut hair gleamed under the lights as he listened to whatever Keith was saying to him.
The space on Jeremyâs other side was empty. Gofor it, Eva told herself. Get up there before somebody else does.
As the band started playing again, she trotted up the steps, then edged her way across to Keith and Jeremy. âHey, guys,â she said, interrupting Keith in mid-sentence.
âHey, Eva.â Keith gave her a distracted smile.
Jeremy smiled, too, and a cute dimple flashed on the right side of his mouth. But then he turned and stared straight ahead again.
Sit down, Eva told herself. Get his attention. Flirt with him a little.
Then ask him to the Homecoming Dance.
Crossing her fingers that Jeremy didnât already have a date, she slid next to him and propped her feet on her book bag. âLet me guess,â she declared. âKeith has been talking to you about movies. Right?â
It was an easy guess. Keith wanted to be a film director. He
always
talked about movies.
âYeah,â Jeremy nodded. âBut I havenât been listening much.â
âThanks a lot,â Keith muttered.
âGive him a break, Keith,â Eva said. She leaned closer to Jeremy.
âIâm too tense to listen to anyone,â Jeremy confessed. He pointed to the platform. âI really hope Tania wins. Do you think she will?â
Evaâs shoulders sagged a little. Heâs too busy worrying about whether Tania wins to pay any attention to me, she thought.
âI donât know,â she replied. âI hope she does, too. But she wonât be upset if she doesnât. Didnât she tell you that?â
Jeremy nodded. âYeah, she did. But
I
still want her to win. Sheâs my sister, you know? Well ⦠my stepsister, but that doesnât matter. Weâve gotten really close since my dad and her mom got married this past summer.â
âThatâs great,â Eva told him.
âIt really is,â he agreed. âI guess it sounds weird. But having a real family is so awesome. I never really had one before. My mother died when I was a baby. And I hardly ever saw my father because he worked all the time. He stays home more now.â
Why is he telling me all this? Eva wondered.
âTaniaâs really happy about it, too,â she said.
âThatâs one of the reasons she doesnât care about being Queen. She said so many good things have happened, it just doesnât matter.â
Keith sighed loudly. âIf this were a movie, the sappy music would start playing right now.â
Eva reached behind Jeremy and jabbed Keith in the arm. âWhatâs the matter? Donât you like happy stories?â
âTheyâre okay,â Keith replied with a shrug. âBut movies need more drama.â
âThis isnât a movie,â Jeremy reminded him.
âNo kidding. Anyway,â Keith went on, âlet me tell you more about my video.â
âWhat video?â Eva asked.
âThe one Iâm going to make,â Keith declared. âThe one thatâs going to get me a scholarship to film school. Thatâs what I was talking about before.â
He gazed at Jeremy, his blue eyes bright and intense. âHey. You know what would really make it a great video?â
Jeremy shook his head.
âIf Tania would act in it,â Keith exclaimed. âSheâd be perfect, right? Do you think sheâd do it?â
âMan!â Jeremy laughed. âYouâll do anything to get close to Taniaâwonât you?â
Keithâs face grew dark. He raked his fingers through his black hair and licked his lips. âYes,â he replied softly. âAnything.â
Whoa!
Eva thought. What a
