for me. I’m starting to feel more like myself again. The therapy helps, I think. I mean, I’ve only had one session, but who knows? I honestly am just hoping I can get my head screwed on tight enough to hold down a job.”
“Don’t worry,” Nathaniel said. “I’m going to make sure I help you with that too.”
“Really?” She asked.
“Really,” he said. “When I said I wanted to help you I didn’t just mean I wanted to pretty you up for a week and send you back on the streets, Lillian. I want you to feel like you can hold your own again because I know you can. You don’t really need me to take care of you. You’re stronger than that.”
“I guess I just needed a good kick in the rear,” she said. “That and just someone to show me they cared. I had sort of given up on me.”
“Well, I won’t give up on you,” Nathaniel said, and she scooted closer to him.
“Good to know,” she said and placed her hand on his knee. They arrived at the restaurant moments later, and they enjoyed a small meal at a five-star restaurant that, had Nathaniel not been who he was, would have taken weeks to get into. Lillian always seemed a bit uncomfortable with the lavish treatment, but Nathaniel loved spoiling her.
After dinner Nathaniel had the limo driver take them to a local theater; it was the same movie theater he could recall going to as a kid. They were a bit dressed up to go to the movies, but they didn’t mind. In fact, the simplicity of the date was something Lillian seemed to enjoy. He even joked around in the middle of the movie, pulling an old-fashioned stretch followed by putting his arm around her which she found to be charming. During the previews, they chatted a lot about their childhood spent in the theater, the local arcade, and various other adventures. Nathaniel truly enjoyed reminiscing with her, but their conversations were not merely about reliving old times. They talked about their goals and ambitions. Truthfully, conversing with Lillian came naturally to Nathaniel.
They left the theater and headed back to the hotel. There was a new feeling in the air –not the usual sexual tension between the two of them, but something else entirely. Nathaniel stood in the doorway of her hotel room, his hand in hers, ready to drop her off for the evening. They kissed slowly as he held her in his arms. “Get a room,” a young kid said as he darted down the hall, laughing.
“We got one,” Nathaniel muttered.
“Use it!” he shouted as he rounded the corner.
Lillian laughed. “I think I’m actually going to go to sleep,” she said shyly.
“Same here. I’ve had a long day, and I’m sure you have too,” Nathaniel leaned in and kissed her several more times.
He pulled away, and she whispered, “I love you.”
An instinctual, “I love you too,” escaped his lips, and they pulled each other close for a final kiss before she slipped into her room, and he headed down the hall towards the elevator. He had meant what he had said, and he felt as though he was walking on air. He rode the elevator back up to his room, feeling the heavy toll from a long day weighing down on his shoulders. There was a smile on his face that he could not wipe away as he entered his hotel room.
He headed straight for the bedroom, ready to retire to bed when he spotted Eliza fast asleep on his pillow. He cringed. Shit, I forgot about her , he thought and shook his head, deciding he needed to sleep on the couch that night.
