myself." Kate turned to Bruce. "Do you think that we have that?" Bruce embraced Kate, holding her close to him. "I do." His lips brushed hers. "You thinking about being stuck with me for forty years?" Kate shrugged. "Sounds like a lifetime. I would have to think about it." Bruce laughed as he took her hand and they continued their stroll. He squeezed her hand tightly. As they continued their walk, the silence between them became apparent. "Is everything alright?" she asked. "Yes. I thought we would take a little walk over here to have a some dinner at this restaurant that I've wanted to try. If that is okay with you." "That sounds perfect. But it seems like you have something else on your mind." "I do have something." "What is it?" She hoped that it was not something too serious. Bruce stared up at the sky, entering the conversation slowly. "I have to go out of town for a few days. I have a client that needs some help setting up a new account and it would be best if I go out to where he is to get things set up." Kate caught her breath. "Oh. Well, that's not that bad. I thought that you had something more seriously wrong." She tried to hide the fact that she was a bit disappointed. "That makes me feel a bit better. I hate to leave you." Bruce caressed Kate's face. "I know. But work calls right?" "Who would have thought that the tables would turn? Usually it's you that has the clients to tend to." His kiss settled her mood. "How long will you be gone?" She dreaded hearing him say that he would be gone for anything other than a few days. "It should be a day or so." In the time that they had been together, Bruce had taken clients, but had only taken local clients or ones that he could consult virtually. She knew that his consulting business was important to him and there was no way that she would stand in the way of his growth. "Good for you. I'm glad to see things are going well for you, Bruce. Trust me, everything is going to be fine while you are gone. I'm proud of you." "Thank you, sweetheart. I was a bit concerned about how you would feel about me traveling. I'm always commenting on how hard you are working and here I am about to begin working as hard as you." She tried to give him a reassuring pat on the arm. Truth was, she was a little nervous about how their relationship would handle the changes coming due to their careers.
Chapter 2
Every morning, Bruce and Kate woke up to have breakfast with one another. Even though they did not live together, they made sure that they met for a meal together before they started their day. It was one of the things that she looked forward to each day. This morning would be the first morning in over a year that Kate ate alone. She almost fixed enough for the two of them, but stopped herself before she wasted food. Just as she was settled into the silence, her phone rang. A smile came across her face as her heart warmed to see Bruce's picture on the screen of the phone. "I was just thinking about you," she admitted. "That's good to know that I'm missed." Kate did not want to say just how much she missed him. It would run the risk of sounding way too sappy for her own taste. "I was making breakfast and realized that this is the first time in over a year that I have to eat alone." "I really don't want to make a habit of leaving my woman alone like that. Her mind could start to wander. And you know what they say about idle minds," he joked. "You really don't have to worry about that with me. I just miss you so much." She could not resist letting her feelings slip out. Hopefully it would make Bruce feel more secure. "I won't be gone too long. I don't want you to miss me too much more." Bruce had a way of making her feel like she was a young girl talking to her first crush. "I'll be counting down the hours until you get back to me." They said their goodbyes, Kate ate her breakfast, and set off to work. So this must be what it feels like to have
