miss her. Sheâs got jet-black hair andhas already been sent to the headmaster twice for wearing black nail varnish. Sheâs only been here a short while, and all the other girls hate her already.
Anyway, this morning she jumped to the front of our classroom and said, âIâve got an announcement to make. And it wonât interest most of you because youâve got no personality.â There were a few muttered protests at this, but she had everyoneâs attention all right. âI live on the dark side,â she said. âAnd if thereâs anyone here like me â¦â
âThereâs no one in the world like you,â I called out. âThank goodness.â
âIâm starting a new secret organization called M.I.S.,â she went on, âwhich stands for Monsters in School. Weâll meet in a secret place tomorrow night and tell really scary tales about werewolves and zombies and, of course, my total favourites: vampires.â
That gave me a bit of a jolt. You donât hear anything about vampires for ages â and suddenly theyâre mentioned everywhere.
âI should warn you though, weâll be telling very gory stories, so if youâre easily frightened donât even think of applying.â
âItâs not the monsters who frighten me,â I called out, âitâs you.â
Iâd only meant it as a joke but Tallulah gave me the full death stare. âI knew, Marcus Howlett, that youâd have to try and be silly,â she snapped. âAnd youâre just a total wimp anyway.â
âHey, I resent that,â I said. âOne of my toes is quite brave.â
She sighed heavily. âIf you want to know more about M.I.S. just ask me. I may not accept you as a member though.â She was looking right at me now. âBecause Iâm very choosy who I allow to be in my society.â
âIn fact, you might not even choose yourself,â I said.
Tallulah gave me another glare and stormed to her seat as the teacher came in.
âThat girl,â I said to Joel, âhas all the charm of a rattlesnake.â
11.15 a.m.
You wonât believe this, blog, but Joel has decided heâs going to join M.I.S.
âYouâdvolunteer to spend a whole evening stuck in some grim dive, with hertalking on and on about monsters?â I queried.
âI probably wonât go back,â Joel admitted, âbut Iâd like to try this M.I.S. once â just for the experience.â
âWell, itâll be just you and her,â I said.
âOh no, youâre wrong there,â said Joel. âOthers have been joining too. But I think theyâre only going along to laugh at her.â He grinned. âWhich is exactly why Iâm going too.â
10.15 p.m.
This evening my dad announced: âGot a little surprise for you.â
âNot another one,â I said.
âAh, this is a present,â said Mum.
âMy own pet bat?â I suggested.
âCome into the sitting room,â said Dad eagerly, âso you can see your gift properly.â
I sidled in after them and Dad said, âThis belonged to me.â
âSoitâs a second-handpresent. Wow, thanks.â
âBe quiet, dear,â said Mum. âThis is a very important moment.â
âSorry,â I murmured.
âI believe the time has arrived,â said Dad,âto pass this gift on to you.â Then he handed me a cape. It was black, with red lining and a pointy collar. And inside were Dadâs initials, which are the same as mine. It was very heavy and nicely made. But it wasnât for me. I knew that, even before I tried it on.
It was too big for me for a start. âYouâll soon grow into it,â said Dad eagerly. âNow, take a look at yourself in the mirror.â
âSo vampires can see themselves then?â I asked.
âOf course,â said Mum. âYou might find your reflection
