prop? Something to use in a film about a day in the life of a contestant in one of the Gollywhopper regionals? If he made that into a video, maybe it would go viral. Yeah, right.
He kept his camera rolling anyway. âWhat am I doing here?â he muttered.
âGetting ready to win the Games?â
He turned, his camera focusing in on . . .
âYouâreââ He felt his mouth open and close like a starving guppy.
She laughed. âI get that all the time. Isnât this awesome? I mean the Games. I mean even without me having a chance to win this year. Iâm Bianca. Whatâs your name?â
He dropped his camera to his side but kept it rolling to capture the sound. âCameron.â
âHi, Cameron.â She reached for his camera, and he did something he never did. He let her have it. Then she pointed to Walker. When had he gotten here? âWhoâs this guy?â
âHeâs my brother,â said Cameron.
âYay! Cameronâs brother!â She handed him the videocam. âYou have a new job. I love being on camera and your brotherâs never in his own movies. Am I right or what?â
âYouâre right.â
She turned back to Cameron. âSo Cameron, huh? Thatâs a lot of letters.â
Just one more letter than in your name, he wanted to say.
âYou need a nickname. What should we call you?â
She could call him anything she wanted.
âNot Cam. He was the worst boyfriend ever. His name shouldâve been Jerkface. Something else, some other name. What about Ron? Ronny? No. You donât look like one.â She bit her lip. âI have it! Letâs do initials. Whatâs your last name?â
âSchein?â he said, like he was asking her if he was right.
âShine? Like the sun shines?â
âThatâs the way it sounds.â
Bianca shook her head. âNah. Not Shiny. And CS doesnât have any rhythm. Ooh. Maybe your middle name!â
âNo,â said Cameron. âItâs Stanley.â
âUgh.â
âI know.â
âSo that makes you CSS. Like âkiss,â but with a C .â She shook her head. âYou probably donât kiss many girls.â
You think?
âNot yet, I mean,â she said.
Huh?
âOh, you will be hot one day. Those lips will get some action.â
Could he turn any redder?
âLook at you with those green eyes, hiding behind all that curly hair. And youâre smart, right?â
âHe is,â said Walker, still holding the camera.
Bianca smiled even bigger, then looked beyond Cameronâs camera to the professional one that had been filming them the whole time. âI have a feeling about this guy,â she said. âHis name is Cameron Schein. You need to watch him. Heâs going to be hot one day. Right now heâs just preheating.â
A woman came up. âTime to go, Bianca.â
Bianca held out her hand. âSharpie, please?â
The woman handed her the marker, and she stepped over to Walker. She steadied her hand on his and signed the camera: Bianca LaBlanc .
âReady now?â said the woman.
Bianca held up a finger. âBoth cameras are rolling, right?â
She paused to make sure. Then she planted a big kiss on Cameronâs cheek. âA kiss for luck.â Then she gave him a hug. âThis is not for the cameras,â she whispered, âjust for you. Iâm rooting for you, and I donât say that to everyone.â She pulled back. âGood luck, Cameron Schein. See you in Orchard Heights.â
And for a minute Cameron believed every word she said.
âY ou what?â said Spencer, death-clutching his Last-Chance Lottery card.
Cameron pointed to the lipstick lips on his cheek, then to the signature on his camera.
Spencer shook his head. âFirst you win my ticket. Then Bianca kisses you. Next thing youâll be promoted to king of England.â
