her feel better.â
That was true.
We sat on Kimâs bedroom floor and, before she opened the box, she said this, she said, âPromise me you wonât laugh.â
We were supposed to be studying for biology, and I looked at her.
âWhat?â
She cleared her throat. âIâm serious about this, Em. Promise me you wonât laugh.â
I sat on my hands so she wouldnât see that I was starting to shake.
âPromise me,â she said again.
Kim never got like this.
âOkay,â I said.
âPromise.â
âI promise,â I said.
She pulled the books out of the box.
âThis one,â she said, holding up Reunions , âthis one was on the Today Show. â
âSo?â
âSo. Itâs legit.â
She turned it over and showed me the picture of the lady on the back. She had silver hair and yellow teeth and she was wearing a tiara.
Kim read the bio out loud: ââTennesa Green, medium to the stars, shows readers in eloquent and insightful prose how easy it can be to communicate with their loved ones. Miss Green lives in Bowling Green, North Carolina, with her three cats, Prince, Princess, and Pea.ââ
âPrince, Princess, and Pea?â
âI told you not to laugh,â she said.
âIâm not laughing.â
âGood because itâs not funny.â
âI know,â I said. âItâs not funny at all.â
âIf I had three cats thatâs what I would name them.â
âI know,â I said. âTotally.â
âTotally,â she said, and then we both started laughing.
â¢
She assigned me two books: Hello from Heaven and Talking to Heaven: A Mediumâs Message of Life After Death.
I was supposed to read them, take notes, and then report back.
When I got home, I put them in my underwear drawer and sat in the closet.
â¢
We didnât talk about the books again, and I thought it was over.
I hoped it was over. Most of the time I liked to pretend like nothing was wrong.
She was fine.
But then, a month later she called me and said this: âI found a real live medium trainer.â
âWhat?â
âI found a guy.â
âWhat?â
âCome over.â
I sat on the phone for a second, trying to figure out what she was saying. She was talking fast and what?
âCome over.â
It was ten on a school night.
âI canât.â
âOf course you can.â
âHow?â
âTell Joe to bring you.â
I hesitated. Joe wouldnât drive me over there and really, I didnât want to go. The whole thing made me feel sick.
âEmmy?â
âWhat?â
âTell Joe. Itâs important.â
I walked across the hall to Joeâs room. He was playing video games.
âCan you take me to Kimâs?â
âNo,â he said.
âPlease?â
âNo.â
âWhy not?â
âBecause I donât want to.â
I stood there. âHe wonât take me,â I said into the phone.
âLet me talk to him.â
I gave the phone to Joe and he said, âWhat?â
Kim said something to him and he turned red. âShut up,â he said.
Then he started laughing.
âFine,â he said. Then he handed the phone back to me.
âOkay,â she said.
âWhat?â
âHeâll bring you.â
I looked at him. He was back into his game, sniping guys in the water.
âWhat did you say to him?â
âWho cares?â
So Joe took me to Kimâs apartment, and while he went to get some sunflower seeds at Smiths, I found out about Dr. Ted Farnsworth.
âWho?â
âDr. Ted Farnsworth.â
I sat on her bed and she scrolled down on the page.
âHeâs from Texas.â
âSo?â
âSo my dad was from Texas.â
I blew out some air. Trish told us that once. That Kimâs dad was from Texas and he drove a Corvette. Blah blah blah.
Kim kept
