daughter in a home?â She blinked frantically, but tears spilled over onto her cheeks.
âHey,â he said, standing up and depositing a sleeping Mandy in the chair. He hovered awkwardly by the bed. âDonât cry. Itâs just for a couple of days. If you want me to call someone, I will. Just give me a name.â
âIâm sorry,â she whispered. âEverything is falling apart. It was going so well and now I donât know what to do or where to turn. Iâ Thereâs no one to call.â She looked up at him. âCanât she stay here, with me?â
âIn the hospital? No. They didnât even want her to visit you, let alone spend the night. Youâre in no position to take care of her, Elizabeth. I know the home sounds bad, but itâs not.â
âYouâre right. I donât have another choice.â She covered her face with her hands. âIt just makes me feel like Iâm an awful mother. Itâs not the place Iâm worried about, Iâve been there. Iâm going to work there.â She wiped her cheeks with her fingers. âIâm Rebeccaâs new assistant. I moved us here to take the job. Iâm supposed to start Tuesday. Whatâs she going to think about me? Iâm dumping my kid on her doorstep, and Iâm going to miss my first day of work.â
The sobs began in earnest. He hesitated about five seconds, then perched on the edge of the bed. Careful not to tangle the IV lines, he patted her shoulder. She clutched at his arm, all the while muttering how stupid she must look to him. The sheet slipped to her waist. He tried not to stare, but couldnât help noticing the shape of her breasts under her hospital gown.
Travis told himself he was at best behaving unethically, and at the worst acting like a pervert. He had no business noticing Elizabethâs body. Sheâd just had surgery for Godâs sake. But he did notice, and admire, all the while calling himself names.
âIâm sure Rebecca will understand,â he said. âItâs not as if you planned this.â
âI know, but Mandy will be there all alone. I wishââ
âDo all the women in your family leak this much?â
âWhat?â She blinked and looked up at him. Her dark lashes stood up in spikes, her nose was red and her cheeks blotchy. She was a mess. It brought out his knight-in-shining-armor side and he resisted getting involved. He knew what would happen then. Better for both of them if he just backed off.
âBetween you and Mandy, I think we could have floated a ship today.â
She smiled wanly. âDonât make me laugh. It hurts.â
âOkay, then I wonât tell you the one about the parrot with no legs.â
âHow did he stay on his perch?â
Travis stood up and winked. âYouâll just have to wait until you get better to find out.â He glanced at his watch. âIâm going to take Mandy over to stay with Rebecca. Iâll call you in the morning and make sure youâre doing all right, then Iâll bring Mandy back here in the afternoon.â
âWhy are you being so nice to me?â
âJust doing my duty, maâam.â He gave a mock salute and picked up the sleeping child. âIâll leave my number with the nurse.â
âThank you for everything,â she said, pulling the sheet up and smiling at him. âIf Mandy wakes up, tell her I love her.â
âYou can tell her yourself when you see her tomorrow.â
Chapter Two
âW hat do you mean chicken pox?â Travis asked. He stared down at Rebecca, seated behind her desk in her office at the local child services facility.
âI mean I have eight children in various stages of chicken pox, and the other twelve have been exposed. Sorry, Travis. If youâd explained why you were coming by, I would have told you what was going on and saved you the trip. I thought you
