Emily, the most timid member of Kimberleyâs band, put in quietly.
Kimberley ignored her.
âI want to find out.â When Kimberley said she wanted something, there were no arguments. She smiled slightly. âThink I know how.â
Break came.
Juniper Class, along with everyone else, filed out into the yard.
Break time was normally a time Nicholas hated. He would either be standing in a corner on his own, or surrounded by the other kids, Liamâs gang especially, who would take the mickey out of him.
For some reason, today things seemed to be different. As soon as he went outside, there were Liam and his mates. But they seemed oddly friendly.
âYou all right, Nick?â Liam gave Nicholas a grin, which was rather scarier than his usual look. âCome round with us?â
Nicholas allowed himself to be led away to the playing field, where Liam and co. usually met.
âLike a crisp?â Justin never liked delays on the food. He ripped open the bag and held it out to Nicholas. âNew kind. Roast beef and parsnip flavour. Theyâre dead nice.â
âOh.â Uncertainly, Nicholas took one. âThank you.â
âHave some chocolate, too.â Ben shared his own snack with the newest member of the gang.
They stood on the rough grass in silence for a moment or so.
âWe were wondering what was in your bag,â Justin said abruptly. âAaargghh!â
He grabbed his ankle at a sudden pain.
âOh!â Liam smiled angelically, and moved his foot. âSorry.â He addressed Nicholas. âDonât listen to him. Heâs a professional idiot. We just thought weâd like to talk to you. No sense, you always standing there on your own.â
âItâs nothing anyway,â Nicholas put in. âNothing interesting.â
ââCourse not,â Liam agreed. He gave Justin a look that said: Youâre dead .
There was another awkward silence.
Eventually Liam spoke again.
âHey Nickâ¦Iâmâ¦having a few mates round to mine, after school. You canâ¦come along, if you like.â
âOh.â Nicholas shrugged. âThanks.â
âAnd bring your schoolbag,â Justin finished. âOw!â
He doubled up in pain, at another correction from his leader.
Over by the hopscotch grid, an argument was taking place.
âI donât see why it has to be me!â Emily was saying wildly.
âHe likes you,â Kimberley said firmly. âYou get on with him.â
âI donât even know him that well!â poor Emily protested.
âYouâre the only one.â Sophie stuck up for her leader, as ever. âHeâs not going to fancy Kimberley, is he?â
Kimberley shot her a look.
âBut on a date!â Emily cried.
âNot a date exactly,â Kimberley said. âJust invite him over to yours, for tea. Today.â
âIâve got Guides tonight!â Emily objected.
âAll right then,â Kimberley said. âTomorrow. Get him to yours, straight from school. Then all youâve got to do is find the momentâ¦and search his bag.â
Kimberley sniffed.
âTeach him to be so secretive.â
Emily looked dumbfounded.
Not for the first time, she was starting to think Kimberley was just a bit mad.
Nicholas suddenly seemed to be popular everywhere. After school, everyone stared in amazement at the sight of him leaving at the centre of Liamâs gang, in pride of place. Very few boys made it there.
The stories went around the school quickly, as they always did. Nicholas had been round to Liamâs, with the rest of the gang, for pizza. Heâd been invited to Liamâs birthday party, at World of Go-Cart. And the next morning, another story was round the Breakfast Club before you could say âtoastâ.
Emily had asked Nicholas on a date.
Or at least, for tea.
âAnd remember,â Kimberley said to her firmly. âWeâre
