you in charge, were you?â
âJesus, no.â Jake stiffened further, shaking his head and frowning. âBut I can sure as hell think of a lot of people at the Cosmos Agency Iâd rather have bossing me. I can even draw up a list of lesser assholes Iâd prefer.â
âWell, amigo , we must repress our true feelings and concentrate on saving Bascomâs ass,â urged his partner. âSo, por favor , control your dislike for Roy when we arrive at this get-together.â
âIâll behave,â promised Jake with minimal conviction.

DAN narrowed his left eye and studied the slim, dark-haired young woman who stood beside the skycar. âYou donât believe any of that, do you, Molly?â
âI sort of think I do. Especially after last night.â Molly Fine made an impatient gesture that urged him to climb aboard. âGet in or weâll be late.â
Dan circled the vehicle and climbed into the passenger seat. âThis Susan Grossman is a recovering Tek addict, isnât she?â
âShe is, yes,â admitted Molly as she took the controls of the skycar. âBut sheâs off Tek now and what sheââ
âGo back, slowly,â requested Dan, âand explain just what went on last night.â
The car quietly rose up off the morning beach.
Molly said, âJust shy of midnight Sue saw this image. Well, it was some kind of telepathic vision, sort of.â
âOkay, letâs pause for comments from the audience,â Dan cut in. âI donât believe thereâs any such thing as a telepathic vision.â
âSure, there is. Matter of fact, Sueâs experienced several over the past few weeks. Just about all of them, from what Iâve been able to determine, turned out to be accurate.â
âYou never mentioned any of this to me, Molly.â
âWell, thatâs mostly because I anticipated your skeptical reaction.â
âAnd this vision she claims to have had last night isnât the only one, then?â
âSusan seems to have developed an ability a few weeks ago. She confided in me about what was happening to her,â explained Molly as the skycar climbed to an altitude of 5,000 feet.
âThis time she saw her brother being murdered?â
Molly answered, âThatâs what Iâve been telling you. Sue still isnât in terrific shape and sheâs pretty much afraid of her father and the dreadful woman heâs got living with him. Thatâs why she waited awhile before getting up the nerve to go downstairs to phone her brother and check onââ
âShe doesnât have a phone in her room?â
âHer father doesnât think sheâs ready for one yet.â
âHow old is she?â
âAround twenty.â
âWhat youâre putting your faith in is a full-grown woman who isnât trustworthy enough to be allowed near a vidphone orââ
âYou have to know her father to understand the setup. Heâs extremely protective of her.â
Dan said, âOkay, go back to what happened.â
âSusan tried to phone her brotherâs place, twice. But there was no answer, not even from a bot servant.â
The car sped on across the morning, aimed for the SoCal Police Academy.
âDid she call the law next?â
âNo, she phoned me,â replied Molly. âShe knew theyâd react the way you have. You know, decide this was just a Tekkie having another hallucination.â
âThen you sent the police to Dwight Grossmanâs?â
âActually, I only asked somebody to check and see if her brother was okay,â she said. âThey went there and found heâd been killed.â
âYou know they arrested Walt Bascom, my dadâs boss, for the killing, donât you?â
âYes, but Bascom didnât have a darn thing to do with it,â she assured him. âSue saw the
