answer her calls or texts within a few minutes. I cringed at the memory of the last break up.
She called me on Sunday morning when I was at church with my family. I, being the respectable Catholic that I am, left my phone at home, so I didn’t disturb my fellow parishioners. After the service when we returned home I had over ten missed calls and twenty text messages. I responded to one of her texts letting her know that I was at Mass. She flipped out. She called me back and screamed at me demanding the name of the girl I was sleeping with. It took me almost two hours to get her calmed down enough to actually have a normal conversation with her. Marie asked after I got off the phone why I put up with that crap. My only excuse was to shrug. There was no way in hell that I’d tell her it’s because the girl I want refuses to acknowledge me.
Christie and I followed Beau through the double doors. The moment we walked in the commons silence greeted us. Every set of eyes turned to us and then flicked over to Roxy who had her head on the table. I elbowed Beau, nodded over to our regular table and whispered. “I’ll say something to her in class. If we do something now, you know they’ll suspend us too and if that happens Momma will have our hides.”
He nodded in agreement and took a seat at the table next to the teacher’s lounge. Christie looked up and batted her eyes at me. “Want to head over to the janitor’s closet and make out until the bell rings?”
I grabbed her hands and kissed her knuckles. “I’d love to, babe, but I need to keep an eye on Beau. Just to make sure he doesn’t try anything until I’ve at least scared the little girl into retracting her story.”
She pursed her lips into a pout crossing her arms underneath her overly padded breasts causing them to push up a bit more. “Is that all you’re going to do with her?”
I held back a groan and resisted the urge to roll my eyes. “What else would I do? You should know by now that you are the only girl in my life.” For now. I quietly added to myself.
That seemed to placate her . She smiled at me before leaning up on her toes, kissed my cheek and sashayed over to a small group of her friends. I waited until she was over there engrossed in a conversation before glancing at Roxy. Her dark hair fluttered around her face. A tiny hand pushed a few strands behind her ear. A flicker of pink touched her full bottom lip before her teeth bit down on it. Her jade eyes narrowed at the girl at her table.
With a sigh, I walked over to Beau at the table and took a seat next to him. “You really jus’ gonna try ta talk ta her?” He grumbled at me.
“Might as well. She’s in a few of my classes. I could try to turn on some of the Cajun charm Momma swears we have and sweet talk her into telling the truth.” I smirked as my eyes traveled back to her.
“Ain’t dat gonna cause problems wit ya girl?” He glanced over at me with his brows furrowed in worry. “I don’ wanna have ta listen ta her screamin’ at ya. And den try ta keep Marie or Momma from slappin’ da fire outta her.”
“Don’t worry about that. I’ve already told Christie that I am going to talk to the little girl to get her to stop those rumors. ” I shrugged and glanced back over to Christie talking to her friends. She stood in the middle of them talking non-stop. Her hands moved wildly as she tried to emphasize her point. One of her friends gasped and tried to speak but Christie always seemed to interrupt one of them and try to be the center of attention.
I shook my head my gaze traveled over to where Roxy was seated. She was slumped down in her chair with her arms across her chest glaring at her friend Jess. Her jaw clenched as she narrowed her eyes before a small smile graced her face as she rolled her eyes. She was always so quiet just sitting back and observing those around her. I never saw her trying to interrupt anyone. She never had to be the center of
