held up his hands but still didnât meet anyoneâs eyes.
Colt grinned. âIâll walk him to the house, since my bike is parked by your door. See you guys later.â
âBye, Colt.â Tori waved. âIâll bring more candy next time I come, Pete.â
Pete didnât reply, but Kate was sure she saw a tiny smile play at the corners of his mouth. âYouâre so good with him. Once we have a trainer and learn more, maybe we can teach Pete to ride.â
The smile eased off Toriâs face, and she sighed. âAt least you and Colt each have a horse to take lessons on when you hire an instructor.â
Kate sat up with a jerk. â If we get an instructor. Mom and Dad havenât decided yet.â
âWell, they said yes to thinking about taking horses to board. And youâll be able to use Capri for lessons.â
âHey, youâre my best friend. Iâm not going to leave you out.â
âNot like you have much choice. Iâll never get a horse.â Tori scrunched her brows. âI can be your groom.â
The muscles in Kateâs stomach tightened. Tori became her best friend not long after Kate and her family moved to Odell in March. She hated hearing the hurt in Toriâs voice. âNo way.â Kate jumped from the chair, knocking it onto its side. âCome on.â
âWhat?â Tori sat still and stared up at her. âIâve done enough work today. I want to drink my pop.â
Kate giggled and reached for Toriâs hand, excitement surging through her. âGet out of that chair. Hurry up.â She pulled Tori to her feet. âIâve got a plan, and youâre going to love it.â
Tori swung into step with Kate. âWhatâs up?â
âYouâll see. Help me tack up Capri.â
âHuh?â Tori put on the brakes. âYou rode her before I came.â
Kate swung around, allowing a grin to spread across her face. She couldnât wait to see Toriâs reaction. âI know. Stop with all the questions and help me, all right?â
Tori shuffled forward. âOkay, okay. Youâre awful bossy.â
âYouâll be glad in a few minutes.â Kate reached for the royal-blue halter and matching rope hanging on a horseshoe hook next to the stall door. She slid the door open, then slipped a carrot out of her jeans pocket and handed it to her snuffling mare, who always seemed to know when treats were near. âThere you go. Youâll get more later, girl.â
Tori jogged to the tack room, brought back the box of brushes, and set them down. She made another trip, returning with the saddle and pad. âWhen are you gonna tell me what youâre up to?â
Kate rushed through grooming her horse, then tossed the brush into the box and swung the saddle pad onto Capriâs back, ignoring her friendâs question. Toriâll love this. I just know it! âGrab her bridle with the snaffle bit and a lunge line. Oh, and my helmet.â
âSure thing, boss .â Tori shot her a mystified look and disappeared into the tack room again. She came back with the helmet, bridle, and lunge line clutched in her hands. She set the helmet on top of the grooming tools and waited till Kate cinched the saddle and reached for the bridle. âEnough already. Spill.â
Kate grinned. âYouâre going to ride Capri too. Iâm sharing her with you!â Why hadnât she thought of this before? Her friend wanted a horse in the worst way, and she was right. Her parents couldnât afford one. Best friends were supposed to share everythingâsecrets, dreams, clothes. So why not a horse?
Tori backed up a step. âNo way. Iâm a beginner, and sheâs a lot of horse.â
Kate dangled the coiled, thirty-foot lunge line with confidence. âThatâs what this is for, silly. Iâm not going to turn you loose on my horse. Weâll walk her around in a
