as the moon. They offered me 10% more than I was currently making. I already felt like I was making so much money. The offer was unreal. The benefits were equal to or better than what I currently had. They would pay all my moving costs, including covering the remainder of my lease in Manhattan. I was speechless. Then I was breathless. If I signed a contract within one week I would receive a generous signing bonus equal to two months of the proposed salary. Ron and Lauren looked expectantly at each other and then back to me. They had done everything they could to impress me. They also knew the offer was superb. The only question was whether or not I wanted to take the job and move to Los Angeles. I took a deep breath and exhaled. “This is an extraordinary offer. I don't quite know what to say.” “We hope that you will say 'yes',” said Ron as he smiled at me. “This has been a lovely day. I am truly impressed with Adele and what you want to accomplish. I am beyond flattered in your interest in me. I need a little time to process everything before I make my final decision.” Ron and Lauren clearly hoped that I would say 'yes' on the spot, but they must have expected I would need some time to make my decision. They were gracious and warm for the remainder of our time together. They asked my plans for the evening and I told them that I would be visiting with a friend who lived in the city. I agreed to be in touch with them as soon as I made my decision. I indicated that I would get back to them before the end of the following week. The car service took me from the restaurant to my hotel. I had the rest of the afternoon before Jeremy would pick me up for dinner. I changed into my bathing suit and headed to the pool for a swim. I figured some laps would clear my mind and help me think.
Chapter Five
After a nice swim I went back to my hotel room and showered. I put on the soft hotel robe and padded to the comfy chair in the corner of the room. I called my parents to fill them in on the job offer and get their opinion. They were both over the moon about the job offer. They also liked the idea of the shorter flight between Austin and Los Angeles vs. the longer flight to New York. But they also wanted me to consider where my heart was in all of it. They shared a story with me that they never had before. When they were dating, my dad had cheated on my mom with an old girlfriend. I was floored. That didn't sound like my dad at all. He loved my mom so unconditionally. He would never do anything to hurt her. The situation wasn't exactly the same as with Brandon, but they offered it to me for whatever it was worth. My parents had been dating for several months and had a terrible argument. They hadn't broken up over it, but they were both steaming. They didn't speak for a week. It was during that week that it happened. My dad fell into the arms, and bed, of a former girlfriend that he ran into at a local bar. It was just the one time, but my mom then broke up with my dad when he confessed to the one-night stand. After a few months, and a lot of tears and talking it out, my parents got back together. The rest, as they say, was history. They built an incredibly strong relationship. They were married two years later. Nine months after that I came along. My sister three years later. My parents have been happily married for over 22 years. They always seemed the perfect couple. They provided an amazing family life for my sister and me. Their point, which wasn't lost on me, was that they would have missed out on all of it if they hadn't worked through my dad's one very bad decision. It took a lot for my mom to forgive him, but she did. They weren't condoning what my father, or Brandon, had done. And they weren't saying that everyone could, or even should, get back together. What they wanted me to know was that it worked for them. But they had to make it work. And they both wanted to make it work. After I got over the
