steps.
Everything around me is falling apart,
Selena thought. She hated living in such a shabby house. But she knew it was all her mother could afford. Money was tight since Selenaâs father had died.
âThereâs no way anyone else could be Juliet,â Katy insisted, following Selena into her bedroom. âI mean, Alison is good, but sheâs not as good as you. Even she says so.â
âAlison is just being nice,â Selena answered. She dumped her backpack on the pink-and-white bed-spread.
âIâll help you learn your lines for the audition,â Katy offered.
âMmm-hmm,â Selena replied absently. But she already knew she didnât want helpâshe liked to learn lines by herself. âWhy donât
you
try out for one of the parts?â she suggested. âYou donât always have to be a stagehand, you know.â
Katy snorted. âWhat part could I get? IâIâm too big to get a decent role.â Katy was about twenty pounds overweightâand very self-conscious about it.
âStop putting yourself down.â Selena tried to keep the annoyance out of her voice. âThere are lots of parts in the play. Maybe you could be Julietâs nurse.â
Katy didnât respond.
Selena dipped a tissue in a jar of cold cream and began removing her stage makeup.
âSelena?â Katy said after a moment. âWhen we were little, did you ever think youâd grow up to be so popular?â
âOf course not,â Selena replied. âI thought Fd be fat and unpopular forever.â
âLike me,â Katy murmured.
Selena ignored her. âBut once I got interested indrama, I stopped thinking about being popular. I just wanted to be a good actress.â
âIt happened so fast,â Katy said. âI mean, you took one drama class and that was it. You lost weight, you started going out with Danny ⦠and you were the star of the very first play you did.â
âPure luck,â Selena reminded her. âThe girl who had the lead had to leave school.â
âI know,â Katy agreed. âBut everyone knows youâre the best actress at Shadyside High. You might be good enough for a professional career.â
Katy sank back against the pile of pillows on Selenaâs bed. She sighed. â1 hope you never get so popular you arenât my friend anymore.â
âHeyâno way!â Selena cried. âWhen I win the Academy Award, Iâll get up there and say, âI want to thank my best friend Katy Jensen, whose willingness to climb up on the catwalk made it all possible.ââ
They both laughed.
Selena finished wiping her face, then opened the closet. She pulled out jeans and a green sweater.
âAre those jeans new?â Katy asked. âWhat are they? A size three?â
âTheyâre a seven,â Selena replied, laughing. âIâm not that skinny!â
âCompared to how you used to be, you are,â Katy replied. âCompared to me, you are.â
âYou could lose weight too,â Selena pointed out. âItâs not like Iâm a diet goddess or something.â
âFor sure,â Katy scoffed.
âIâm serious,â Selena insisted. âI lost weight because I wanted to do drama. I knew I couldnât get lead parts unless I stopped eating so much.â
âThatâs the difference between you and me,â Katysaid. âI never cared about anything as much as you care about drama.â
Selena glanced at her friend in exasperation. âWell, find something to care about,â she said. She pulled her hair back and tied it with a green hair band. âHow do I look?â she asked.
âAwesome,â Katy replied. She glanced at her watch. âWeâd better get going.â
âWe donât want to get there too early,â Selena said. âWeââ
She stopped when she heard the tapping at the bedroom
