see my baby walk off stage, it wasn’t gonna happen now.
“What’s up, Eve?” I flexed my arms, working the pain out of my bad shoulder though I had yet to face her.
“Everything is set. Just wanted to make sure with my niece in such a precarious condition, you didn’t plan to back out?”
My jaw set and I turned around to face her with hard eyes. Not that it meant a damn thing to her. Eve may have been mesmerizing and how could she not be when she was related to the love of my life? Their mothers were sisters. She had an ageless face with that gorgeous olive complexion, a body that wouldn’t quit and her dark bob with its caramel highlights only made her hazel-green eyes light up in the circus show of flashing lights.
As usual, she was dressed impeccably in a fashionable pants suit that hugged every one of her curves and a pair of high heels that obviously indicated a government SUV wasn’t too far away. They certainly weren’t made for walking long distance.
“Look, I told you I was meetin’ with Brad. It’s been set up already. As much as he doesn’t want to be a fuckin’ snitch, he doesn’t want to spend the rest of his life at SuperMax either. I’m takin’ Ronan and some of the fellas from Birch Tree will also be at the meeting. I’d like to say that Dizzy was coming but he’s preoccupied at the moment.” I smirked knowingly that any sort of dig about my brother would affect her more than she would ever let on.
Eve’s jaw clenched before she asked, “How is he? I know he’s not taking any better care of himself—the man seems to have a death wish.”
I chuckled. “Yeah, I would two if I had to deal with both you and Bronaugh. Death has to be better.”
She glared at me with cold eyes that were icier than an Eskimo’s cock. “I’ve never been the issue, Hardy. You’re too young to understand a situation that goes so beyond your comprehension, you wouldn’t even know where to start so if I were you, I’d stop with all the jokes.”
“Sorry, babe. I didn’t realize you were so sensitive—”
“ Sensitivity has nothing to do with it!” she exclaimed though her voice was hushed. “Keep pushing me, and I’ll have you transferred to Boston. The Saints charter out there seems to be having issues with leadership. You want me to play dirty to keep up with you, oh believe me, I can. I don’t want to deprive Talia of another man but if you’re just going to be another of what she’s had so far then she’s better off without you in the long run.”
“Eve, I—”
“I don’t want to hear your excuses, Dexter . Your whole fucking family has acted like what Dizzy and I had was a joke but you have to remember that we were both playing a dangerous game at the time and we both gave everything up for the sake of our families—our children . You want to have a go at me, and try to blame me for everything that’s wrong between him and Bronaugh but we both know I had nothing to do with that.
“I have suffered . . . every day I don’t get to spend time with the man I am truly in love with but I have persevered, and I have always done my job. I saved the Saints—a piece of shit fucking one percent club that should be going down with the Knights too. Through it all—through everything! The drugs, gunrunning and now fucking prostitution and human trafficking going on—”
“The girls aren’t trafficked. They sign a contract with Kitaev and he pays them.” I glanced away after I’d said my peace. For fuck’s sake, Talia and I were having a daughter and I’d die if she got caught up with what Kitaev and his Bratva were doing. Not only that but we were helping right along with him and no less culpable. We were just as guilty as him—guiltier because we knew the score, and yet we’d still made a deal with the devil.
It was Eve’s term to smirk. “Yes, I’ve seen their contracts. Or what, do you think we just pick up informants off the streets? I know what he gives them after
