answered while looking for a place to pull over.
âCade?â She sounded the same, and her musical voice hurt his heart in ways it hadnât hurt in years. âCan you talk?â
âIn a minute.â He sounded out of breath and hated that. But he
was
having trouble breathing.
Lexi. Dear God.
âIâm driving and hauling a horse behind me. Let me get off the road.â
âOkay. Iâll wait.â
He set the phone back in its holder and eased to the shoulder so he wouldnât jostle Hematite. Then he grabbed the phone again. âIâm here. Whatâs up?â
âItâs Rosie. She... Herb took her to Sheridan Memorial.â
He felt dizzy. âWhy? What happened?â
âWe wonât know until they do some tests, so we shouldnât jump to conclusions, butââ
âDamn it, Lexi! Whatâs wrong with her?â
âShe might... She might have had a heart attack.â
âNo. Oh, no.â Panic gripped him. âShe canât. Sheâs too young. She canât have a heart attack. Sheââ
âMaybe itâs not that. But Herbâs scared. He asked me to come and take care of things here.â
âDid he ask you to call me?â
âNo. Iâm doing that on my own. I thought you should know.â
âDamn right I should know! Iâm a little north of Colorado Springs right now. Iâll get there as soon as I can.â
âCan you do that? Where were you going before I called?â
âIt doesnât matter. Iâm changing my plans.â
âBut youâre hauling a horse.â
âAnd the ranch has a barn.â
âTrue.â She hesitated. âSo youâre alone?â
âNo.â
âOh.â
He couldnât help smiling. He knew that tone. She hadnât liked his answer. âI have a cat.â
âOh!â
âYeah, he came along for the ride. Are there any barn cats at the ranch?â
âNot right now.â
âDogs?â
âNo, no dogs, either.â
âThatâs just as well, then. Did you call Damon and Finn?â
âI donât have their numbers.â
So she only had his. Sheâd kept it in her phone for five years. He shouldnât read too much into that, but he already was. âIâll call them. And if you hear anything more about Mom, call me. Iâll see you in a few hours.â
âGood. Thatâs good.â She hung up.
He wondered how sheâd meant that and if sheâd be glad to see him. The thought of seeing her made him nervous, but now that he had no choice in the matter, he discovered that he wanted to. His mental picture was five years old, so sheâd probably look different.
Her hazel eyes would be the same, but guaranteed her hair would have changed. Women tended to do that, and sheâd complained about her natural color. He liked the warm brown, but she might have dyed it or cut it.
When heâd talked to his foster mother on Christmas Eve, sheâd said Lexi had broken up with her latest boyfriend. And now Rosie was in the hospital. How could he be thinking of Lexi and their screwed-up relationship when the mother of his heart was lying in a hospital bed?
First he called his buddy at the Bar Z to say he wouldnât be arriving, after all. Then he used the conference-call function on his phone to contact Damon and Finn. He didnât want to waste time repeating the news.
Eventually he got them both on the line. âListen, I donât have time to talk, but Lexi called from the ranch and Momâs in the hospital with a possible heart attack. Iâm driving up there now. I want both of you to get there as soon as you can arrange it.â
âAbsolutely,â Damon said. âIâll text you once I have a plane ticket.â
âMe, too.â Finn sounded scared. âIs she gonna be okay?â
âYes.â Cadeâs jaw firmed. âShe has
