hello. What was it about police work that made you have bad phone manners?
âThis is Federal Marshal Anita Blake. Youâre expecting Marshal Kirkland this morning?â
âHeâs not coming,â Fox guessed.
âNo, but I am.â
âWhat happened to Kirkland?â
âHis wife is in the hospital.â I wondered how much I owed him on the phone. I decided not much.
âI hope sheâs going to be all right.â His voice had lost some of its edge. He sounded almost friendly. It made me think better of him.
âShe probably will, but theyâre not sure about the baby.â
Silence for a moment. Iâd probably over-shared. That girlness again. Harder to be terse.
âI didnât know. Iâm sorry that Marshal Kirkland couldnât make it and even sorrier for the reason. I hope things work out for them.â
âMe, too. So Iâm filling in.â
âI know who you are, Marshal Blake.â He was back to not sounding entirely happy. âYour reputation precedes you.â That last was definitely not happy.
âAre we going to have a problem here, Agent Fox?â
âSpecial Agent Fox,â he said.
âFine, are we going to have a problem here, Special Agent Fox?â
âAre you aware that you have the highest kill count of any legal vampire executioner in this country?â
âYeah, actually, I am aware of that.â
âYouâre coming here to raise the dead, Marshal, not execute anyone. Is that clear?â
Now I was getting pissed. âI donât kill people for the hell of it, Special Agent Fox.â
âThatâs not what Iâve heard.â His voice was quiet.
âDonât believe all the rumors you hear, Fox.â
âIf I believed them all, I wouldnât let you step foot in my city, Blake.â
Micah touched my leg, just to be comforting, while he drove one-handed. We were already on 70, which meant weâd be at the airport in moments.
âYou know, Fox, if youâre this unhappy with me, we can turn around and not come. Raise your own damn zombie.â
âWe?â
âIâm bringing an assistant,â I said, voice angry.
âAnd exactly what does he assist you with?â And his voice was full of that tone, that tone that men have been using against women for centuries. Thattone that manages to imply weâre sluts without ever saying so.
âIâm going to be very clear here, Special Agent Fox.â My voice held that calm, cold anger that I used in place of screaming. Micahâs hand tightened on my thigh. âYour attitude makes me think we wonât be able to work together. That youâve listened to so many rumors that you wouldnât know truth if it bit you on the ass.â
He started to say something, but I cut him off.
âThink very carefully about the next thing you say, Special Agent Fox, because depending on what it is, I may or may not be seeing you in Philly today, or ever.â
âAre you saying if I donât play nice, you wonât play at all?â His voice was as cold as mine had been.
âNice, hell. Fox, Iâd just take professional at this point. What has got your panties in a twist about me?â
He sighed over the phone. âI researched the federal marshals who are also animators. Itâs a short list.â
âYeah,â I said, âit is.â
âKirkland comes in, does the job, leaves. Every time you get involved in a case, it all seems to go to hell.â
I took a deep breath and counted to twenty. Ten didnât do it. âGo back through and look at the kind of cases that I get called in on, Fox. No one calls me in unless things have already gone south. Itâs not cause and effect.â
âYou have worked some rough shit. Iâll grant that, Marshal Blake.â He sighed again. âBut youâve got a reputation for killing first and asking questions later.
