my cousin.â
âYour cousin?â
âWell,â he said, âmy cousinâs kid, so I guess that makes him my second cousin. He just turned twenty-one and I told him when he did Iâd take him to Vegas. So here we are!â
âWhere is he?â
âPlayinâ craps,â Jerry said. âHe learned all he could about it, developed a system, and now he says heâs gonna put it to â what was it? â oh yeah, practical use.â
âGreat,â I said. âVegas loves system players.â
âI thought maybe you could get away for a drink.â
âSure thing.â I looked around, waved over a guy named Darrel to stand in for me. âIâll be in the lounge if something comes up.â
âNo problem, boss.â
We got a table in the lounge and ordered two beers. A few losers were sitting at the bar, drowning their sorrows, and a few winners were buying drinks at another table.
âWhere are you staying?â I asked.
âHere,â Jerry said. âBilly and me are sharinâ a room.â
âWhy didnât you call me?â I asked. âI would have got you a suite.â
âI ainât lookin for a handout, Mr G.,â Jerry said. âI told the kid Iâd take him to Vegas for his twenty-first birthday. Iâm footinâ the bill â my present.â
I had to admire him for that. He knew he could get freebies from me whenever he wanted â and he had never asked.
âWhatâre you doinâ, these days?â he asked me.
âWell,â I said, âI was minding my own business, until today . . .â
I told him about Joey and Abby Dalton, and the photographer.
âI seen her on
Hennessy
,â he said. âSheâs some dish.â
âYeah, she is.â
âYou gettinâ some of that, Mr G.?â
âNo, Jerry, Iâm not,â I said. âIâm just trying to help the lady out.â
âHow you gonna do that, exactly?â
âWell, first Iâm going to go and see the photographer,â I said. âHe still has a studio in town.â
âThat so? When you goinâ?â
âTomorrow morning.â
âYou want some company?â
âWhat about your cousin?â
âIâll leave him at the craps table,â he said. âCome on, Mr G. You know youâll get into trouble without me.â
I didnât think that was true, but on the other hand he was already in town, and he had offered. So where was the harm in letting him ride shotgun?
âOK, youâre on.â
âFirst you gotta buy me some pancakes in the morninâ,â Jerry said.
âI knew this was gonna cost me,â I said.
âNot so much,â he promised. âJust a coupla stacks.â
FIVE
W e touched base some more, finished our beers, and then I had to get back to work.
âI gotta check on the kid anyway, see how much dough heâs got left.â
He bought the drinks and then we walked back to the casino floor together.
âHave you seen Mr S., Dino or any of the other guys lately?â he asked.
âJust Joey,â I said. âDino was here last month, but nobody since. Frank Jr.âs coming to Tahoe next month to play Harrahs. Frank will probably come in for a few nights.â
We split up at my pit and he asked me what time I was working till.
âFour a.m.â
âGoinâ home after that?â
âIâll spend the night here, so I can meet you down here early. Like nine?â
âGood,â he said. âIâll be hungry by then. You mind if I bring the kid?â
âNo, Iâd like to meet him,â I said. âIâve always wondered if your size runs in the family.â
âGuess youâll find out tomorrow,â Jerry said. ââNight, Mr G.â
âGood-night, Jerry.â
I spent the night in a room I had used before, when staying over was
