World?â
âOne question only,â Megan purrs. âMy private jet is waiting.â
âOkay. One question it is. How come you use a jet when a broom is so much cheaper?â
The two of us fall about laughing. And then Megan remembers Glenna.
âSo anyway, Glenny, youâre going to do the play, right?â
âCan I think it over?â
âThereâs no time for that. Miss Boyleâs depending on you.â
âNo, sheâs not.â
âShe is! I ran into her at the shops. She said thereâs been no interest at all in the auditions. I told her she could rely on us. Youâll do it, wonât you, Glenny? Itâs going to be so much fun. Say you will.â
âOh, I suppose so. If you really need me.â
âFantastic!â
Megan jumps up to hug her but Glenna suddenly looks alarmed. âSit down,â she hisses. âSit down.â
âWhatâs happening?â
âDonât turn around. Itâs that weird boy.â
âTheyâre all weird,â I say. âWhich one do you mean?â
âYesterday. He was on the bus waving like a lunatic.â
âOh. That one. He is a lunatic.â
âI thought he was cute,â says Megan.
âTheyâre crossing the road. Two of them. Heading straight for us. Donât look. Ignore them.â
Megan stands up, turns around, has a really good look.
âWhat are you doing?â
âBeing friendly.â She flicks on her dazzling smile.
Glenna groans.
I look too. Theyâre so different. One has black hair and is solidly built, not too hard on the eyes, either. The other is the lunatic waver. He has a thick tangle of orangy red hair and heâs skinny and gawky-looking. His smile is way out of control.
âHowâs it goinâ?â
Theyâre here.
âIâm Lanny â Lanny Pringle.â Big cheesy smile. âAnd this is me mate, Richard Head.â
The good-looking one rolls his eyes. âIgnore him. I do. Itâs David Curtis. Hi.â
âYouâre the Smithâs Hill Girls, right?â The smiling crazy one says this.
âThatâs us,â admits Megan.
âI bet you donât remember me. Iâll give you a clue.â He waves frantically, just like he did on the bus.
âIâve got it,â I say. âWe saw you at the beach. You were drowning.â
âNooo â I was wavinâ â from the bus.â
âOhh, really?â
Megan hides her face behind a menu. Sheâs battling not to laugh out loud.
âI was with him,â David says, âbut I didnât wave.â
âNo, thatâs right. He wanted to moon yers. I had to stop him.â
âLanny, donât make me kill you.â
Everyoneâs smiling. Except Glenna. Sheâs always been shy around boys.
âI think we should go now. I donât want to be late.â She pushes her chair away from the table and stands. âWeâre auditioning for a play.â
She gets a shock then, and so do I. David steps forward and shakes her hand.
âGood to meet you,â he says. âI didnât catch your name?â
âItâs Glenna. Hi.â
I watch her neck turning bright pink as though itâs been injected with a dye.
âIâm Caitlin Stewart.â
âIâm Megan.â
We each get a warm handshake.
His weird friend isnât into handshakes. He slouches against a wall, rubbing his chin as if heâs locked deep in serious thought.
âA play,â he mutters. âIâve always wondered what it would be like to be an actor.â
No one takes much notice.
âCatch you later,â says Megan as we start to file out.
I say goodbye with a smile, but I only look at David.
Glenna whispers, âSee you.â
Weâre almost out of there when we hear, âHang on a sec â can anyone audition for this play?â
âI think
