escaped, though,â said Chris. âHis youngest son, Zeus.â
âYeah, as I say, Iâve heard of him.â
âAnd when Zeus was old enough, he slit his fatherâs belly open and freed his brothers and sisters, and that was the end of Cronos.â
âCool story,â said James. âBut Cronos was hardly a sicko, was he?â
âHe was pretty sick,â said Jibber-Jabber. âI mean, he chopped his dadâs dangly bits off and chucked them into the sea. Thatâs pretty sick, I reckon. On a scale of one to ten thatâs definitely at least a nine.â
âYeah, I guess.â James had been idly fiddling with a stack of books, poking and prodding them, and now they collapsed across the table.
Chris tutted. âWhat are you doing here, anyway?â he said, tidying the books.
âWhat does it look like, noob? Iâve come for your World Book Gay event.â
âAre you supposed to be Harry Potter?â said Wiki.
âNo, Iâm supposed to be Uranus ,â said James, pronouncing it âyour anusâ again. âThatâs why I look so ugly and stupid.â
âIf youâve just come to ruin everything, you can sod off,â said Chris.
âOh, so this is an exclusive event, is it?â said James. âNot open to everyone? Iâm not good enough to read your precious books? And there I was thinking maybe you could teach me something.â
âNo, you werenât,â said Chris. âYouâve just come to laugh at us.â
âYeah,â said Wiki. âThis was supposed to be something fun, something for us lot. We donât need you wrecking it.â
James put his hands up in surrender, with a pantomime-innocent expression.
âWhat did I do?â he said. âIâm here, arenât I? Iâve even brought some reading glasses. So whatâs the deal? When does it start? Do I get a badge and a certificate saying âI am a reading nerdâ?â
âGo away, James.â
âIâve got as much right to be here as you lot.â
Hattie came over to James. She was tall, with a round face and slightly goofy teeth.
âPlease donât spoil it for us, James,â she said. âIâve been really looking forward to this.â
âWho are you supposed to be?â said James, looking Hattie up and down. She was wearing some old-fashioned clothing sheâd lifted from the Victoria and Albert Museum next doorâa long skirt and a bonnet.
âIâm Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice , if you really want to know.â
âI donât really, no.â James looked at the others, sizing them up. âOkay, Wiki and Jibber-Jabber, what are you? A couple of hobbits from The Lord of the Rings ?â
âYes.â
âThomas? Ermâ¦no. Youâre going to have to help me out.â
âIâm Alex Rider.â
âYeah, right. What about you, Chris? Youâre a wizard of some sort. Gandalf? Dumbledore?â
âRincewind, actually, from the Discworld novels. Lookâyou can stay if you want, James, as long as you donât ruin it for everyone else.â
James leaned back in his chair, putting his hands behind his head. âI only came to hear the fairy stories.â
âJust ignore him,â said Hattieâs younger sister, Alice (who was dressed as Alice from Alice in Wonderland ). âWe can still do what we were going to do.â
âThatâs right,â said James.
Chris sighed. The event had not got off to a good start. He glanced at the big windows that were set into the wall all down one side of the library, overlooking the parking lot. The stars were coming out. At this rate it was going to be a long night.
If Chris had looked out the library windows, he might have spotted a dark shape moving across the parking lot. Nobody was supposed to be out here at night, but as part of the security team and the
