getting things fixed right away,â Ethan said, shaking Nickâs hand.
âNot a problem. The heating company will be here soon. Youâre their first stop.â
Faith glanced between the two men and beamed, her smile bright.
âWhat?â Nick asked her.
âYou two. Getting along so well.â She tossed her large bag onto her desk and looked at her husband. âDonât you have to drive to Manhattan for a meeting?â
Ethan nodded, his eyes dark and hooded, focused on Nick. âIâll leave when he does.â
Faith rolled her eyes. âAnd I spoke too soon. Nick isnât interested in anyone but Kate, isnât that right, Nick?â
âJesus,â Nick muttered. âIs nothing private?â
âIn this town or between those two women?â Ethan asked, of Faith and her best friend.
Nick managed a laugh, though he wasnât thrilled to know heâd been their subject of conversation.
âGet used to it,â Ethan said. He stepped up to his wife, slid his hand behind her neck and pulled her in for a long kiss.
One that made Nick uncomfortable for witnessing it but had nothing to do with jealousy. At all. He meant it when he said any old feelings were long gone.
Nick cleared his throat, and Ethan turned his head and glared. âYou have some place to be,â Nick reminded Ethan just for the hell of annoying him.
Ethan scowled, kissed Faith once more and started for the door. âYou sure you have a ride home?â
She nodded. âKateâs picking me up after school and taking me home. Iâll see you tonight.â She placed a hand on his shoulder.
While the newlyweds said their final good-byes and Faith walked Ethan out, Nickâs thoughts turned back to Kate and how to get the school teacher to take him more seriously.
âIâm back,â Faith said, breaking into his thoughts, as she returned. âYou and Ethan really need to learn to get along.â
âWe get along fine.â For two guys whoâd never been friends. âBesides, we just like getting under each otherâs skin. He knows I have no interest in you other than friendship.â
âMen,â she muttered, sitting on the corner of her desk. âSo itâs all fixed?â She gestured to the wall shelves.
âYes. Just keep the lighter items on that particular section, just in case,â he said of accessories she stocked for her customers. âDid anything break?â
âJust one piece. I can absorb the loss . . . thanks to you giving me your whole new house to decorate!â Her voice rose in excitement. âI owe you so much. First renting me this space, then hiring me as a decorator. Youâre a good friend, Nick.â
He shook his head. âWho else would I hire? You know me as well as anyone.â
âWell, if thereâs anything I can do for youââ
With her words, an idea settled in his brain. âIf you mean that, you can put in a good word for me with Kate.â
âYou donât think I have?â Faith asked.
âAnd?â
She sighed, pausing in thought. âLook,â she said at last. âKate doesnât think youâre serious, that you just see her as a challenge.â
âAnd I think thatâs a bullshit excuse,â Nick muttered.
Faith grinned. âI agree.â He folded his arms across his chest and leaned against the wall. Suddenly a thought struck him. âThereâs no one else, is there?â he asked.
Faith shook her head. âDefinitely not. If you want my opinion, you need to get Kate alone and see if you canât get her to relax around you a little bit. Use that charm of yours.â
Nick grinned. âIâm glad you think Iâm charming, but what does Kate think?â
Faith bit down on her lower lip, a sure sign she wasnât comfortable with the conversation. âWithout giving away too much, I know sheâs
