leg.â
âBut I donât want you to break a leg.â
âItâs just something you say to actors,â Janey said. âIt means good luck.â
âOkay, break a leg â but I hope you donât.â
There was a long wait for the star to come out of her dressing room. Three cameras had been set up to film the action from every angle. Emily went to the back of the room to be out of the way. She watched over everyoneâs heads with her eyefinger.
Bright lights lit up the huge greenhouse, which was filled with all sorts of plants. Emily could see Janey and the other kids looking out through the bars of the cage.
When Melody finally came on set, everyone clapped. Then the director spoke.
âThis is the last scene we have to film in the whole movie and itâs the most important one. If we mess it up the movie will be a flop. So, please, everyone do your best! Okay? Places everyone! Action!â
Melody came running from the back of the greenhouse with the aliens chasing her. She startedripping plants out of their pots, looking for the key to the cage. The kids in the cage stretched out their arms screaming, âSave us! Save us!â Emily could hear Janeyâs cries above all the others. Pots and dirt flew everywhere as two of the cameras moved overhead. Melody started swinging a big stick at the aliens.
Suddenly a frown came over Melodyâs face. She stopped and just stood there. The aliens stopped chasing and the kids stopped yelling. Everyone was looking at the star.
âCut!â the director yelled. âWhatâs the matter, Melody?â
But Melody didnât answer. She put her hands over her face then ran past the director and the crew and past Emily. In a flash sheâd disappeared out a side door.
âWhatâs going on?â the director yelled. âFind out whatâs wrong with that girl and bring her back. Sheâs probably in her trailer! Honestly, stars,â he added, shaking his head, âwhy do they have to be so difficult?â
âSheâs not in her trailer!â someone yelled.
âWell find her! People donât just disappear into thin air!â the director shouted back. âOkay, cut the lights, weâre wasting electricity.â
âWhat do you think happened?â Janey asked when she joined Emily.
âI donât know,â Emily said. âOne minute everything was going perfectly and the next minute she ran away.â
âMaybe she got dirt in her eye,â Janey said. âThere were plants and dirt flying everywhere. Or maybe she was about to throw up. Acting can be very scary. It can make you sick.â
Emily thought for a minute.
âI donât know what happened,â Emily said, âbut Iâm going to try and find out. Iâll be back in a minute.â
Emily went out the side door and headed towards the starâs trailer. Instead of going in she slipped around behind it and climbed the back fence. Then she ran along a path through thewoods. Soon she heard the soft sound of someone crying. She made her way through the bushes and around a big rock. There was Melody Wu, her head in her arms, sobbing.
âMelody?â Emily said. âAre you okay?â
Melody looked up, startled, and quickly covered her face with her hands. âGet away from me!â she shouted. âLeave me alone!â
âAre you sure I canât help you?â
âYes, Iâm sure! Just go away!â
âOkay, Iâm going,â Emily said.
âWait a minute,â Melody said, sounding less angry. âCan I use your phone?â
âMy phone? I donât have one. Sorry.â
âYou donât have a phone? What kind of person doesnât have a phone?â
âA person like me,â Emily said, âand you.â
âOf course I have a phone! Iâve got four of them! I donât have one with me because Iâm acting in a movie! Are
