way. And Heather can be one of my stepsisters. And maybe Fiona can be the mouse who helps me clean up the kitchen.â
âOne of the
ugly
stepsisters?â Heather asks, her mouth stopping mid-chew.
It looks like Heather might stand up to Cynthia at last!
âYou donât have to be
that
ugly,â Cynthia assures her. âJust a little, maybe.â
âIâm not sure I want to be a mouse,â Fiona almost squeaks, which basically ruins her objection. All thatâs missing is whiskers and a tail.
âAnd anyway,â Kry Rodriguez points out to Cynthia in a friendly way, âI donât think the idea is for you to tell other kids what they have to be. Itâs not like theyâre all characters in a play about you.â
âIt was just an idea,â Cynthia says, her nose in the air. But she doesnât ever fight with Kry, because everybody likes her. I donât know how Kry does that.
âWell,
my
idea was to be the Little Match Girl,â Fiona dares to say. âBecause she was really shivery and cold, like I am now,â she explains. âAnd she saw a shooting star once, and I did, too. And she probably had weak ankles, just like me.â
Nobody seems to know what to do with all this information coming out of Fionaâs mouth. She hardly ever says a word!
âWhat about you?â Kry finally asks Jared.
âMaybe the Pied Piper,â Jared says, shrugging. âAnd you guys can follow me wherever I go.â
Yeah, right.
Thatâs
gonna happen.
âStanleyâs not here today,â Jared continues. âBut he can be the grasshopper from âThe Grasshopper and the Ant.â Iâll tell him.â
âIâm not sure the grasshopper is the hero of that story,â Kry reminds him.
âMaybe not,â Jared says. âBut he has all the fun.â
âI think Iâll be Snow White,â Heather says almost to herself. âI do like to sleep a lot.â
âOr you could be Rapunzel,â Cynthia says. âBecause you have such long, beautiful hair.â
Heather cheers up, hearing this. A compliment from Cynthia is like an endangered species, itâs so rare. And I can tell for sure that Heather likes the idea of being Rapunzel a whole lot better than being an ugly stepsister. Maybe even more than being Snow White.
âWhat about you?â Emma asks Kry.
âHmm,â Kry says, tapping her chin. âIâm thinking either Little Red Riding Hood, because I love to visit my
abuela
, and we always bring her cookies. Or Iâll be Tinkerbell, if that even counts as a story. Iâd like to make peopleâs wishes come true.â
âEllRay can be the Ugly Duckling if heâs not gonna be an elf, right?â Jared says, poking Kevin in the ribs with his elbow. âOr Pinocchio, because he lies like a rug.â
âI do not lie,â I say, defending myselfâsince it doesnât look like Kevinâs going to do it for me. âMaybe Iâll be Jack, from âJack and the Beanstalk.â He ended up climbing the beanstalk and killing the giant, donât forget.â
âYeah,â Cynthia says. âAfter he sold his momâs whole entire cow for some magic beans.â
âIt ended up good, though,â I say, but I can feel my face get hot. Iâd forgotten about those beans.
I still like the idea of âJack and the Beanstalk,â though. He climbed up that beanstalk one great big leaf at a time, didnât he? Even though he didnât know what heâd find when he got to the top? Jack was BRAVE
.
And Iâm the one who gets to decide.

That Feeling
âFinally,â Kevin says during our last recess. He has managed to corner me near the playground drinking fountain, where the water tastes so weird that you only drink it if youâre dying of thirst.
âFinally what?â I say, like I donât know what heâs talking
