teen said. âNobody returns.â
âWhy not get moving?â Cole asked.
âAre you trying to kill me off?â the teen asked, mildly offended.
âNo,â Cole said. âBut if you have someplace else to go, why stay?â
âWhy do you go on living?â she countered. âYou could come here.â
âIâm alive,â Cole said. âYou died. Why not go to heaven?â
She stared off to one side, her gaze slightly skyward. âI could, I suppose. I donât feel ready. Iâm not sure what to expect. You call it heaven. Hopefully, thatâs what it is. You donât learn much just by dying. You become an echo and see there is an afterlife. But nobody here has been beyond the echolands, so everyone is still just guessing. Moving on will mean leaving behind the echo of my body. I feel the call sometimes. Itâs exciting but also scary. Unknown. I want to wait for my mother to join me. It would be nicer to set off together. But her heart keeps ticking.â
âHowâd you die?â Cole asked.
âYouâre nosy,â she said.
âYouâre the one who was spying on us,â Cole reminded her.
âIt wasnât very nice,â she said. âI had a lung disease. In the end I couldnât breathe. I was full of liquid. It felt like drowning.â
âThatâs horrible,â Dalton said, scrunching his face.
âIt seemed pretty awful at the time,â the teen admitted.
âWhatâs your name?â Cole asked.
âI was starting to wonder if youâd ask,â she said with a giggle. âThat usually comes before the details of your death. Iâm Yeardly. Youâre Cole and Dalton. Iâve been listening since you entered the garden.â
âYou know what weâre after,â Cole said. âIs there any way you can help us?â
âIâve been helping you!â Yeardly exclaimed, sounding a little exasperated. âI felt bad for you. I mean, youâre kids! I told you to watch your words because others are listening. Who is Jenna?â
âMy friend,â Cole said. âWe came to the five kingdoms from Outside. Slave traders brought us. I want to find her.â
âI hear the Temple of the Still Water is beautiful,â Yeardly said. âIâve never been there. Itâs far away.â
âDonât you travel?â Dalton asked.
âWhy?â Yeardly asked. âIâve gotten to know the echoes here, and the lay of the land. I have a good shrine for when I want contact with mortals. And Iâm close to my hometown for when Mom crosses over.â
Cole spoke quieter. âIs there anybody who might know where we can find Honor or Destiny? Can you point us in the right direction?â
âSomebody might know,â Yeardly said. âHard to say who. I havenât caught wind of any rumors about their locations.â She paused. âTell me about Aaron.â
Cole stared at her. She had paid attention to their names. Good thing Hunter had suggested aliases. Aaron was Hunterâs middle name and the name of Coleâs paternal grandfather. The name Sally for Mira came from an old nickname derived from her middle name, Salandra. Hunter had maintained it was best to use codenames that werenât complete lies, because some echoes were experts at detecting falsehood.
While serving as one of the most feared of the High Kingâs Enforcers, Hunter had typically covered his face with a mask. As a result, to move around anonymously, he could simply dress in normal clothes and let his face show. Cole didnât like Yeardlyâs interest in his brother. If word got out who he really was, it could bring a lot of trouble. Had they made a mistake? Had Hunterâs identity slipped?
âWhy?â Dalton asked.
âNo big reason,â Yeardly said. Her tone was casual, but her eyes showed real interest. âHe seemed to be in charge.
