When she hung up, Jennifer noticed that Bruce had tried to call her many times earlier in the morning. Her phone was on vibrator mode and she hadn’t heard anything. She called him back right away.
“Honey, what’s going on?” She said. “I didn’t hear you calling, sorry.”
“Jen, this is bad. Real bad,” Bruce said. She had never heard him so worried and felt her heart race in her chest. What was it this time?
“What happened? Are you okay?”
“It’s about my joint venture with Kenichi. It’s a complete disaster...”
“What do you mean? How bad is it? You don’t make as much money as you expected?”
“I’d be happy if I was actually making a single dollar on this deal. I’m losing money every day.”
“Jesus... A lot?”
“Millions, every day.”
“Oh my God, why? Something you didn’t plan? Is there an economic crisis again? What is it?”
“We don’t know yet. My team of lawyers and accountants are working on it.”
“Did you talk to Kenichi?”
“I can’t reach him for now so I’m waiting but yeah, we have to see what’s going on.”
“Bruce, I’m so sorry. I wish I could help. I don’t realize how bad it is for you and your company though. What does it mean for your business as a whole?”
Bruce sighed. “That’s the scary part. If we continue at this rate, all my shareholders and investors will run away in a week or two. If all of them pull their capital at the same time, I’ll be out of business in a month if I’m lucky...”
Jennifer couldn’t believe her ears. She was stunned. Was it possible? Could Bruce lose everything that fast? Could it be the end?
“What?” She said. “Are you serious? You’re going to go bankrupt?”
“We’re doing everything we can to prevent that from happening but this is where I’m headed. I can’t focus, Jen. I’m completely messed up. I haven’t slept since Bangkok and now, I’m about to lose my company. It’s never been so tough. It’s my biggest failure so far and I have no idea how to handle it.”
“Bruce, you’ve always made it. You will be okay.”
“I don’t know, this time it’s different. It’s not just about me. We’re a bigger company today than we’ve ever been and there are a lot of parties involved, including Kenichi’s side.”
“Are they helping you? Kenichi’s guys? I mean if you’re losing money, he’s probably losing as much as you do, right? He must be freaking out as well!”
“Yes, I know. It’s a big mess in here, we’re really busy but I just wanted to let you know. I don’t think we’ll be able to see each other for now.”
“I understand. Do what you have to do, honey.”
“I love you.”
“Me too. Take care.”
Jennifer hung up and stared at her window. She couldn’t believe that Bruce was in trouble. She realized it was unrealistic, but she had always imagined that he could deal and handle pretty much anything. At least, it was the image many people had about him. He was one of the most powerful men in New York City and that status came with a sort of God-like aura. Now that she was behind the scenes with him, she could see how much pressure and stress he had to cope with. He had to deal with problems that most people would never come close to in their entire life. Bruce had billions to lose and it was probably a very scary thought.
She thought about him and realized she couldn’t do anything. The only thing that was under her control was her own decisions. She absolutely needed to take care of herself and become independent as soon as possible. She imagined the worst case scenario and decided that if Bruce ever lost everything, she would be there for him, both emotionally and financially. She wouldn’t be able to match his current lifestyle but she would give him all the love he’d ever need to get back up and succeed again.
But in order to do so, she had to get her new business off the ground and she needed to start cooking again. Her
