I must question them. I must find out!
When the first woman came, a rather confident
blonde, Kaia attempted to question her.
“Please, Miss,” she entreated, “free me from
this cage!”
Pushing the scant portion of bread, dried meat
and water at Kaia through the bars, the tall woman turned away from her without
any response.
Later, another blonde woman, much younger than
the first, passed by through the camp and Kaia cried out for her attention. She,
too, ignored her, so Kaia called louder. “Please! At least tell me why I am
here! What do they want with me?”
But finally, when she saw the third woman coming
with her evening meal, Kaia had the feeling she might be able to get her to
take sympathy on her. She was clearly the youngest of the four, scarcely older
than herself. She waited until the red haired girl reached her cage and made
the mistake of making eye contact with her. Then she seized the moment.
“Hello, I am Kaia,” she began with a smile,
hoping to remind the girl that she was actually a person, as opposed to the
caged animal she had been treated as since being brought there. “May I ask
your name?”
The girl was reluctant to answer, but could not
bring herself to ignore Kaia’s searching eyes. “I am Gisli.”
“Gisli, how lovely. I see you are with child.
How long until the blessed event?”
Knowing she should not be talking to the
newcomer while still held in the cage, Gisli glanced about nervously. Assured
no one was watching, she replied quietly, “Two months.”
“How nice,” Kaia cooed, trying to establish a
woman to woman connection with the girl. “And who is the lucky father?”
Gisli scrutinized her as though it was the
oddest question she had ever heard. “My baby shall be a child of the pack.
“Yes, I understand that,” Kaia tried again,
thinking the girl simply did not understand her question, “but which one
of them is actually the father?”
An annoyed expression settled upon Gisli’s
face. “The pack is its father.”
“Do you mean to tell me you do not know which
male is the father of your child?” Kaia prodded, realising as she was doing so
that the words probably came across as rather judgmental.
“No,” the girl responded, clearly irritated as
Kaia had worried. “It is not that I do not know. They are all the
father of my baby.”
Perceiving Kaia’s bewilderment, the girl expounded,
“You will understand soon enough,”
Now we are getting somewhere , Kaia
thought. “Please, what do you mean? How will I understand?”
“Your initiation will be soon, when it is detected
that your scent is ripening.”
“My initiation? To what ?” Kaia probed, the
fear evident in her tone.
“Your initiation to the pack, of course,” Gisli
explained. Trying to alleviate her fear, she continued, “It is a great honour
to be chosen to be mated. They choose only the strongest of females. Therefore,
it is of the highest honour for a human female to be chosen to help continue
the species.”
“ Mated ?” the fear in Kaia’s tone had now
graduated to panic. “What are you saying?”
“During your week of ripeness, you will be bred
by all the males of the pack. If you play along, then after that, you shall be
provided with more comfortable accommodations while we wait in hopes of the absence
of your next menses. Upon the determination of conception, you will officially
be accepted within the pack and a big feast will be held in celebration.”
Kaia’s eyes flared with a mixture of panic and repulsion.
“How many males are in the pack?” Kaia asked, needing to know what she was up
against.
“There are five— well six, if you count Dane.
He’s the youngest and not actually officially part of the pack yet. But he
will be participating in your mating.”
Dane— I wonder if he was one of the ones I saw
earlier? Though, certainly none of them had the looks or demeanour of
