with thick, brunette hair.  “Here.  You better eat, girl,”
the woman said to Kaia rather coarsely as she shoved some bread and dried meat
at her between the iron bars of her cage.”
Rubbing the sleep from her eyes, Kaia glanced
down.  The black wolf who had kept her warm during her sleep was gone.  Surprised
to actually feel somewhat disappointed, she guardedly took the food from the
woman’s hand.
    “Where am I?” Kaia questioned.
Offering nothing, the woman turned to go.
However, Kaia refused to be ignored.  “Who are
you?  Why have I been brought here?” she demanded more volubly.
The woman stopped, turning back and smirked at
Kaia.  However, a friendly smile, it was not.  “I am called Synnove,” she
replied brusquely.  “I am alpha female here.”
“Alpha female?” Kaia repeated, puzzled.  “Are
you one of the wolves from last night?”
    “I am a she-wolf, yes, but I no longer
transform.  The wolves you speak of from last night are the males.”’
“Are you the one who has caged me, then?”
“But, of course,” Synnove replied, her tone scoffing
Kaia’s ignorance.
“Why would you do such a thing?” Kaia probed.
“That is the way it is done,” the woman replied
pragmatically.
Kaia could feel the frustration growing in her
at her questions being evaded.
“The way what is done?” Kaia’s voice
elevated, eliciting a snarl from the she-wolf.
    “The initiation.”
The initiation.  Yes, of course, Kaia
thought to herself sarcastically.
“Initiation to what ?” Kaia prodded
further, quickly growing tired of this game.
Deciding she owed nothing more to this bothersome
human female, Synnove rolled her eyes and turned again, this time striding off
despite Kaia’s pleading.
Slumping back in frustration, Kaia’s mind was a
whirlwind of thoughts and questions.
Why have they brought me here?  Clearly, if they
wished to merely eat me, they could have already done so.  What purpose then,
do they intend for me?  And where are the wolves?  I have seen not a single one
about this morning.  Synnove said she was a she-wolf. Would that mean that the
wolves from last night, too, transform back into humans?
Her question was soon answered.  A blur of
movement in the near distance made her jerk her head to the side.
Three men were strutting through the camp, all
naked.  Kaia’s mouth gaped open at the unanticipated sight.  Never before had
she seen a man without at least a few layers of garments adorning his body.  And never had she seen one’s genitalia, except for in fine art, of course.
But that was far different than in the flesh.  She swallowed hard, trying to
force her eyes away from their groins.  Yes, far different.
Moreover, never had she seen men who exuded so
much blatant confidence.  Truth be told, it went well beyond mere confidence.
Cockiness was more like it, although that was something with which she was not
at all familiar in the refined social circle from which she hailed.
One of the men was barking orders at the other
men.  She had the impression he was the leader of the group.  His towering
frame was muscular but lean, his pale hair sweeping past his broad shoulders,
the hard, chiseled features of his stern face setting the stage for the
intensity of his ice blue eyes.
Sensing a raw savagery about him, Kaia disliked
the man instantly.
The other two men followed him, heeding to his
words devoutly, though without sacrificing an ounce of their own assuredness.
During the course of that day, Kaia saw also three
more women pass by.  They, too, were all next to naked.
How can they walk about naked as that?  Are they
not bothered by the cold?
She couldn’t help but notice that all but the
one who had referred to herself as Alpha female possessed swollen bellies.  Realising
that could only mean one thing, a shiver skated down her spine.
My God, they are all with child!  Could that be
what Synnove alluded to earlier?
