doctor’s office.
“Hello, Doctor Lang,” she said, standing at the door.
“Welcome, Pauline, please come in,” he said, smiling as if he was glad to see her again.
She sat down on the couch and took another deep breath.
“Doctor, there is something I have to admit,” she said hastily.
“Yes, go on,” the doctor said, supporting her initiative to start the conversation.
“I don’t think we can work anymore,” she said. Every word that came out of her mouth seemed heavy as a mountain.
“Go on.”
His experience told him that it was not unusual for new patients to find a way to maneuver their way out of the therapy, especially in the first few sessions.
“You see…I am…I think I like you in a way that can prevent us from doing any work,” she said before exhaling in relief.
“Would you mind being a little bit more specific?”
“I’m sexually attracted to you, and I don’t think I would be able to keep my concentration solely on work,” she said bluntly, provoked by his question whichmade it seem as if he didn’t understand what she had meant at all with her previous sentence.
“I was afraid that would happen again,” he said, with a lack of any sign of surprise.
“You see,” he continued, “it is not an accident that the hallucinations were triggered after I came into town. It has happened before. People are reacting to my ‘influence”.”
“Influence?” she asked, trying to assess if he was just a narcissist with the idea that the whole city revolved around him.
“Yes. This might not be easy to understand, but I am a descendant of a race that inhabited earth before humanity developed. Our two races mixed, and some of us still have quite active genes. I actually have to take medications to keep my bear heritage restrained.”
“Bear?” she said in complete confusion.
“Yes, our race could be called a werebear race. And you are probably also bear descended; the only difference is that your genes are inactive. Although, that didn’t stop your psyche from reacting to me, and it most definitely didn’t inhibit desire from flowing through your body.”
To her own surprise, Pauline felt he was speaking the truth. She indeed felt as if they were connected in an unusual way. However, she was also aware that a complete understanding of his words was beyond her current comprehension level.
“So, the rumors were true? You are a werebear?”
“There’s one more thing I have to admit,” he said as he stood up from his black chair and sat down on the opposite end of the couch, avoiding answering her question. “I also felt a strong sexual attraction to you. I wasn’t surprised, since we are obviously genetically compatible. And, now when we will not be a bound by a doctor–patient relationship, I have to tell you I want you to be my mate. Since I first saw you, I felt that you could be the right one. And when you spoke about your hallucinations I knew I was right!”
He moved closer to her, and tenderly fondled her arm, awaiting her reaction.
“Move your hand,” she ordered. “How do I know you’re telling the truth? Another rumor said that you are sleeping with your patients. Am I just another one in your collection?”
The wounds on her heart were still fresh, and they reminded her that she hadto be careful with anybody who proclaimed their love for her.
“She was not even my patient. She was my girlfriend at the time, and we had sex in my office. My assistant heard the screams and she thought I was screwing a patient. We were not careful enough. Besides, you know what you are feeling; your body is not lying!”
“My body can get me into trouble, and you seem to be trouble,” she said.
“I know you would like to kiss me.”
He started to lean towards her.
“No!” She backed away, even though his words were true.
“Okay,” he said as he retreated in embarrassment. “I don’t want to force you, I’m sorry if I pushed you…it’s just hard to
