because we haven't done any of the things you said we have, I suggest you leave now."
"I’m not leaving until you reinstate my friends and co-workers."
"Well, then, we have no choice." The man pressed a button on the table. "Security, please remove Ms. Caroline Lane from our board room. We have a meeting to attend to."
Right after he finished his sentence, the large double doors to the room flew open. From behind Caroline came the handsome man she had groped in the elevator. In his arms was an open, black laptop computer.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Hammersham, and other members of the board. How are you?"
"Oh, uh, we are doing well, Mr. Derringer. We were just calling security to remove this young lady from our board room. She has interrupted valuable company time."
Two security officers in gray uniforms opened the double doors and their eyes immediately fell on Mr. Derringer. He smiled at them. "Hello Bobby, Will, how are you doing?"
"Great, Mr. Derringer," they said in unison.
The color drained from Caroline's face. How could she not have known? Brett Derringer, the owner of Biotech. No wonder he waltzed through the building in such casual attire; he owned the place, he could do whatever he wanted.
Her stomach did summersaults. It was over. Not only were her co-workers and friends were going to lose their jobs, she was most definitely going to lose hers, too. If not for wasting company time, then for playing ‘grab ass’ with her boss.
"Bobby, Will," Brett began, "please escort the entire board of directors out of the building. As of this moment, they are all fired."
"Fired?" asked Mr. Hammersham, now visibly flustered, "what do you mean, sir?"
"I was doing a little bit of research of my own while you were talking with Ms. Lane here." He placed the laptop down on the desk so that it faced them. "On the screen, you will find electronic copies of the experiments she was talking about. Experiments that you never told me about. Now why was that? Could it be that you were each stealing one million dollars a month from the company and having accounting write it off as a business expense? Because that sure as hell is what it looks like to me."
    "Mr. Derringer, we would never..."
"Please don't tell me you’re calling me a liar, Mr. Hammersham. I know fraud when I see it and it is happening here. Now then, you have two options. You can leave on your own volition, or I can have you forcefully removed. Either way, I don't want to see any of your faces around here anymore, do you understand?"
"You will hear from my lawyer," Hammersham growled.
"Wonderful," said Brett cheerfully. "Then we can catch up on old times. Now, get out."
Each man in the room rose from his seat, gathered his belongings, and left. The security guards left behind them, leaving only Brett and Caroline in the large room.
Caroline stood staring at the man before her. She was dumbfounded. She couldn't even begin to comprehend what had happened. "You're uh...huh?"
Brett smiled. "I imagine this is quite a shock for you."
"Well, yes, I uh...why did you come up here?"
"When you mentioned the company was bleeding money, it piqued my interest, naturally."
"But I'm just an employee. Why would you listen to what I say?"
"No, you're an executive assistant. An executive assistant who is overqualified for her job, by the way.”
“It's common knowledge that if you want to know what’s happening in a business, you ask a secretary. I did a little research and when I found out what was happening, I came running."
"Sir, I am so sorry all this happened. I guess I should have stepped up sooner. I mean, I couldn't really afford to because..."
Brett held up a hand. "I understand. The way things are right now, you can't afford to lose your job. You won't have to worry about that now, because you and everyone else who was fired today won't lose their jobs. In fact, you know, you impress me."
    "I do?"
"Absolutely," Brett grinned. "Despite everything you could have
