herâ¦â May followed the thought.
âGood Lord, an intelligent question,â Bryant beamed delightedly at the new guide.
âIt stood on the parapet of the Lion Brewery until 1966, near Hungerford Bridgeâ¦â said Debbie.
ââ¦Because he was married to her,â said May.
âYet we have come to regard it as a symbol of Londonâ¦â
âAnd he stuck to his routine, ordering pizza for them both, sleeping beside her and getting up the next morningâ¦â
ââ¦So when we photograph the lion standing proudly beside Big Ben, we recreate the traditional link between members of parliament â and alcohol.â Debbie flourished a smile.
âOh, bravo!â exclaimed Bryant, âI like her!â
ââ¦And he came to work just as he always did, because he couldnât think of what else to do. He had to stick to the schedule. Not the tour guide at all, but the bus driver,â said May as the truth dawned.
âCorrect. His timetable was still on the kitchen counter, but his jacket, cap and badge were all missing from the flat.â Bryant rose unsteadily to his feet and pressed the stop bell. âThat took you long enough,â he sniffed. âIâm sorry, Debbie. Iâm afraid the tour will have to terminate here.â
May looked out of the window. The bus stop faced New Scotland Yard. It was exactly 11:26am.
âHe wonât run off,â said Bryant. âHe wants to be taken in for the murder of his wife. He loved her. But the neighbours said she never stopped nagging him about his weight.â
The Japanese tourist and the Russian took some very nice photographs of the two detectives leading the devastated driver down from his cabin. âArrest ye merry gentlemen,â said Bryant with a grin as the flashes went off.
âYouâve got holly in your hat,â May pointed out.
âYes,â said Bryant, âI like the smell.â
âHolly hasnât got a smell.â
âIt does, actually. The bright, spiky appearance is all bravado. If you gently break the stem, youâll smell it â thereâs a bitter tang inside,â he explained. âLike so many people.â
