him. That long ago? Clear Skyâs thoughts flitted back to the dream. We grow tired of waiting. They had promised to spread and grow like the Blazing Star. He caught Gray Wingâs eye. âWe have to talk about what we saw.â He scanned the clearing. âIs Tall Shadow here?â âPebble Heartâs treating a scratch on her paw.â Thunder nodded toward a jutting stretch of gorse. âIn Cloud Spotsâs den.â âI can get her if you like.â A mew sounded behind Clear Sky. He jerked around. It was Owl Eyes. The young tom had broadened across the shoulders. His forehead was nearly as wide as Gray Wingâs. âYouâve grown!â Clear Sky exclaimed. âSo has Pebble Heart.â Owl Eyes stalked away and called into the gorse. âTall Shadow, Clear Sky is here.â âI know.â The black she-catâs familiar mew sounded from the shadows. âI can smell his scent.â The bush quivered as Tall Shadow slid out. Pebble Heart followed. âIâll put fresh ointment on it tomorrow,â he mewed. âThanks.â Tall Shadow stopped beside Clear Sky. âWhat do you want?â Clear Sky hardly heard her. He was gazing across the snowy clearing. Jagged Peak nuzzled Eagle Feather near the edge. Pebble Heart followed Owl Eyes across the grass. Sparrow Fur called to them from the broom. âShelter under here!â Gray Wingâs gaze shone proudly as he watched. âSheâs so like her mother,â he purred. âAnd Jagged Peak is turning out to be a great father.â Clear Sky glanced guiltily at Thunder. Would his son ever truly forgive him for driving him away? He looked back toward Jagged Peak, whoâd crouched low to let Eagle Feather scramble onto his back. Jagged Peak is a far better father than I was. He shifted his paws, feeling the cold pierce his fur. And Gray Wing raised another tomâs kits while I wouldnât even raise my own. âWell?â Tall Shadowâs sharp mew jerked him back to the present. âWhy did you come?â He met her eye. âI saw you in my dream last night.â âAnd we saw you.â Tall Shadow tipped her head. Clear Sky leaned forward, his heart quickening. âWhat did the spirit cats tell you?â âTo stop thinking and act,â Tall Shadow told him. âThat weâve delayed too long.â âThatâs what they told me too!â Clear Sky trembled withexcitement. âThey want us to join together.â âJoin together ?â Tall Shadow stared at him, eyes wide. âAre you sure you heard them right?â Thunder tipped his head, curious. âThey told us to spread ,â Gray Wing snapped. Clear Skyâs belly twisted with frustration. Theyâve misunderstood the spirit catsâ message. âWeâll be stronger together, especially with prey so scarce and bad weather coming.â He lifted his face to the thickening snow. âWeâre more likely to spread and grow if we join forces.â Gray Wing narrowed his eyes. âBut donât you remember what I said after the last dream? The Blazing Star has five petals, so I think we should split into five groups.â âWe didnât agree on that,â Clear Sky reminded him. âThatâs only what you think. I think the spirit cats want us to join together!â Tall Shadowâs ear twitched. âLovely, itâs another battle between the two of you,â she growled. âWhen the time comes, I wonât be joining your group. I want to make my own camp in the pine forest.â Clear Sky stared at her. âYou canât!â His mind raced. What were they talking about? This was the opposite of what Fluttering Bird wanted! âTall Shadowâs not the only cat who wants to move on,â Gray Wing murmured. Clear Sky jerked around to stare at his brother. âWhat do you mean?â Gray Wing dropped
