pick you up at eight.â
âJedââ
âEight,â
Jed repeated gruffly, throwing open the locker room door.
Then he was gone, leaving Miriam to stare at the empty hall.
âWhatâs his problem?â Holly asked as they drove toward Fear Street.
Miriam pressed her forehead against the passenger window. âI donât know. Sometimes heâs so nice, and other times itâs like I donât even know him.â
âAre you still going to the party?â
âI think so,â Miriam replied. âHe said heâd pick me up at eight. But first he totally forgot about it.â
âWhat was he putting in his gym bag?â Holly asked casually.
âI donât know.â Miriam turned to her friend suspiciously. âWhy?â
Holly shrugged. âHe just looked nervous when you called his name.â
âWho knows?â Miriam let out a sigh and slumped into her seat. âThe way heâs acting, anythingâs possible.â Miriam sat up straight and glared at her best friend. She knew Holly never asked casual questions.
Holly cocked an eyebrow. âWhatâs that look for?â
âYou know something.â
âNo, I donât.â
âYou
think
you do.â
âI swear, Miriam, I donât know a thing,â Holly replied firmly. âBut ⦠I might be able to find out.â
âHow?â Miriam pressed.
Holly laughed. âYou forget who youâre talking to. I can find out anything. About
anybody.â
Miriam smiled. âI apologize, Your Highness. The Gossip Queen knows all.â
âI try.â Holly grinned. âAnd for my best friend, Iâd try even harder.â
Miriam felt better, but she didnât think Jed would like this plan very much. âPlease donât spy on him, Holly.â
âOf course not!â Holly replied. âIâll just talk to some people. Find out whatâs what.â
âI donât know â¦â
âThatâs the problem, Miriam!â Holly exclaimed. âYou
donât
know.â
Miriam didnât want Holly talking about Jed behind his back. But Jed wonât tell me anything, she thought. What could possibly be bad enough to hide from the girl he loves? This was one of those times Miriam hated gossip, but it was also a time when she simply
had to know.
âDo me a favor, Holly?â
âAnything.â
âDonât be obvious about it?â
Holly gave a sly smile. âI promise.â
She already knows something about Jed, Miriam realized. Something bad.
But what?
What did Holly know?
chapter 3
J ust after eight that night, Miriam sat in the passenger seat of Jedâs Honda Civic. They drove toward Meiâs house in North Hills with Ruth and Patrick sitting quietly in the backseat.
âIf youâre not up to this, Jed, we can always drop Ruth and Patrick off and just go to a coffee shop,â Miriam whispered. âHave a burger by ourselves? You knowâand talk?â
Miriam waited, holding her breath. She was hoping that Jed might say something to help her understand what was bothering him.
He shrugged. âIâm okay.â He looked at her and smiled, and Miriam felt a rush of relief.
âSorry I was so out of it this afternoon,â Jed continued. âItâs the playoffs and everything. Iâm reallystressed. If I donât get a basketball scholarship, it means no college at all. Sometimes I feel like Iâm going to explode.â
His hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly that his knuckles turned white. âSome of the college scouts will be at the game tomorrow. I canât mess up.â
Miriam reached over and stroked his freshly showered hair. It felt smooth and moist. âYouâre going to be great, Jed. The Tigers are going to kill them.â
âThanks, Mir.â He grasped her hand and brought it to his mouth. His lips were soft and warm and
