ask him if we were doing battle training after sunhigh.â
Jealousy gnawed harder in Jaykitâs belly. Why canât I be an apprentice now?
âYou must be really good at hunting.â Lionkit sighed, clearly thinking the same thing.
âItâs just practice,â Berrypaw told them. âLook.â He crouched down. âThis is how you begin.â
Lionkitâs belly swished against the ground as he tried to copy Berrypaw.
âGet your tail down!â Berrypaw ordered. âItâs sticking up like a bluebell!â
Lionkitâs tail slapped against the frozen earth.
âNow pull yourself forward, smooth as a snake,â Berrypaw commanded.
âYou look like youâve got wind!â Hollykit crowed.
Lionkit gave a playful hiss and leaped at her, rolling her onto the ground. She fought back, purring with amusementwhile Lionkit pummeled her belly with his hind paws.
They were so busy in their play fight that they did not notice the sudden noise outside the camp.
But Jaykit did.
Catsâ paws were pounding toward the camp entrance. Jaykit recognized the scents of Spiderleg and Thornclaw. The patrol was returning. But something was wrong. The warriorsâ paws drummed the forest floor in a panicked rush, their scents bitter with fear.
Jaykitâs fur stood on end as Spiderleg and Thornclaw burst through the entrance.
Firestar and Sandstorm were on their paws in an instant.
âWhat is it?â Firestar meowed.
Spiderleg drew in a deep breath, then announced, âThereâs a dead fox on our territory!â
C HAPTER 2
âWhere?â Firestarâs meow was tense.
âBy the Sky Oak,â Thornclaw mewed, panting. âIt was killed by a trap.â
Jaykit heard loose pebbles clattering down the wall of the hollow. Brambleclaw was scrambling down into the camp, followed by Squirrelflight.
âWhatâs happening?â he called.
âThornclaw and Spiderleg have found a dead fox,â Firestar explained. âKilled by a trap.â
âMale or female?â
âFemale,â Spiderleg told her.
âThen there may be cubs,â Brambleclaw growled.
Jaykit was puzzled. âWhat harm can a couple of fox cubs do?â he whispered to Hollykit.
âCubs grow up into foxes, mouse-brain!â she hissed back. âAn adult fox can kill a cat.â
âThe fox had the scent of milk on her,â Thornclaw reported.
âSo there are definitely cubs,â Firestar concluded.
The warriorsâ den rattled as Ashfur scrambled out.
âWhere was this trap?â Brambleclaw asked. Was that anxiety Jaykit heard in his voice? Surely his father knew enough about the Twolegsâ traps not to be scared by them? No, Jaykit decided, it wasnât anxiety, but something else, some darker emotion Jaykit did not recognize.
Thornclawâs answer broke into his thoughts. âThe trap is lakeside of the camp, not far from the Sky Oak.â
âThe cubs must be near,â Brambleclaw guessed. âTheir mother will not have wandered far from them.â
âWhat should we do?â Ferncloud had emerged from the nursery. âWe canât let the forest be overrun by foxes! What about my kits?â
âWe must find the den,â Brambleclaw replied without hesitation.
âIf the cubs are very young, theyâll starve without their mother,â Firestar meowed. âIt would be best to kill them quickly.â
There was nothing malicious in the ThunderClan leaderâs voice; Firestar had to do what was best for the Clan.
âWhat if theyâre old enough to survive alone?â Hollykit asked curiously.
âThen they must be driven out,â Firestar told her. âThey canât be allowed to settle in our territory.â
âThe cubs will be hungry by now,â Ashfur pointed out. âWhat if theyâve ventured out of their den already?â
âThey might find the camp!â
