and was still the sexiest thing Alex had ever heard. Listening to him read poetry was intoxicating. At that moment, he was reading Ode to Nightingale.
“Darkling I listen; and, for many a time
I have been half in love with easeful Death,
Call’d him soft names in many a musèd rhyme,
To take into the air my quiet breath.”
As he read the words, they rolled off his tongue like deep waves of melody, and Alex found herself leaning in closer and closer toward the front of the classroom. All of a sudden, she realized she was not the only person in the room and she was almost about to actually drool. She sighed and looked around. Was she the only one affected by him like this? Most people didn’t seem to be paying any attention at all, but there were a few, and of those, a few glassy-eyed females who were staring at him like he was a chocolate bar they’d like to devour. At least she wasn’t alone. And yet it felt, sometimes, like he was reading to only her.
    “She stood in tears amid the alien corn;
    The same that ofttimes hath
Charm’d magic casements, opening on the foam
Of perilous seas, in faery lands forlorn.
    Forlorn.”
He said the last word with an aching whisper and looked directly at her.
The look made her blush and bite her lip.
When class was over, the time had finally come where she could ignore him no longer. Through her entire school year she had always gotten straight A’s, but for some reason, in his class, she was only pulling a B. Stubbornness was winning out and she was going to have to talk to him to figure out why. She took a deep breath and walked down the steps. When she reached the front and all the other students had left, she cleared her throat. Sitting at his desk, Caleb didn’t look up.
“So, uh, M… er, Caleb, I wanted to talk to you about my grade.”
Still not looking up, he softly said, “Your grade is a B plus Alexandria, what is the problem?”
“Well, um… I have maintained an A average so far and uh…,” she mumbled.
He still didn’t look up or acknowledge her in any way, so she decided to just be out with it.
“I need to know how to make it an A,” she said firmly.
He finally looked up and into her eyes. It was the first time they had been this close in a long time and yet the connection when they looked at each other was still electric. He seemed to be considering something as he stared at her and it took him a long time to answer.
“Well, why don’t we work together to see if we can bring it up a bit then.” He paused, looked down, and then, seeming to decide something, looked back up again. “How about tonight at eight? Meet me here and we will see what we can do.”
That was not the answer she’d expected and her stomach tightened into a ball. Torn, she didn’t know what to say. “Oh, okay, sounds good… thank you,” she said and hurried off before she made an even bigger fool of herself.

“ Oh my God !” screeched Alex’s best friend Rachael. Alex was in Rachael’s dorm room and dripping wet from just getting out of the shower. Her own apartment was far off campus and, nights like this, when she needed to change and go back out, she usually did it at Rachael’s. “I can’t believe you don’t believe me! He is totally into you! Why else would he ask you back so late at night?”
    “I don’t know…” Alex said.
“Alex, you have been talking about this guy for years and you finally have the chance to figure out what you have between you. You have to be at least a little curious!”
Yeah, Alex was curious. She knew from the beginning there was more to Caleb than meets the eye. She’d never stopped thinking about him and she was sick of sneaking looks at each other like high-schoolers.
“Well, I guess I am about to find out. I’m so freaking nervous! And holy crap, Rach, what the hell did you get me to wear?” Alex exclaimed as she looked over the outfit on the bed. It was a short, brown and green plaid skirt, with a
