the same grade and the same age, so Ashton could try out for your team,â my mother said.
âHe could,â I said.
âWe even have a couple of openings,â Kia said. âWe could really use an extra point guard.â
Mark nodded in agreement.
âThe tryouts are on Saturday,â Kia added. âOne to three oâclock at Sheridan College, main gym.â
âThereâll be lots of kids, but youâre a really good player,â I said. âWe could even tell Coachabout you, so it wouldnât be like you were a stranger to him.â
âAre you interested in coming out?â Kia asked.
Ashton shrugged. âI might be. I only have one question.â
âWhatâs that?â I asked.
He turned to my mother. âDo you think I could have another muffin, maâam?â

âCome on, boys and girl, itâs time for a little basketball!â Coach Barkley yelled. âEverybody, letâs have five laps to get warmed up!â
We started jogging around the perimeter of the gym.
âHow many people you figure are here?â I asked Kia as we rounded a corner.
âMaybe sixty, but donât worry, youâll make the teamâ
âIâm not worried about thatâ¦not much. I was just wondering, thatâs all.â
âPick it up!â Coach yelled and we kicked it up a notch.
âHeâs not here,â Kia said.
I ran a quick mental list. Everybody from last yearâs team was here. âWhoâs not here?â
âAshton.â
âOh, yeah. Did you really think he was going to come?â I asked.
âI didnât know, but I figured he might want toâ â
âNick! Kia! Did you two come out here to play basketball or have a little chat? âCause I wouldnât want this tryout to get in the way of your socializing!â
We both put our heads down and started running a little bit harder. This was a new record. I didnât think anybody had annoyed Coach this early in a tryout or practice. And annoying Coach Barkley was not a good idea.
We completed the fifth lap and came to a stop. A couple of kidsâkids who didnât know Coachâwent to get their water bottles from the bleachers. Those of us who knew him knew this was a mistake. A big mistake.
A really big mistake
.
âAnybody who needs a drink and a break can take one!â Coach bellowed. âIn fact, theycan take a break for the next few months because they wonât be on my team!â
The couple of guys who had grabbed water bottles dropped them and rushed back out to join us.
âNick,â Coach said, and I felt a little jolt of electricity go up my spine. Was he going to say something else about Kia and me talking or that I hadnât run fast enough orâ¦â Go into the middle and lead everybody in some stretches,â Coach said.
Kia walked over with me to the center of the gym. âYou really are Coachâs pet, arenât you? Hey, thereâs Ashton!â
Ashton had just come in through the double doors at the end of the gym. He put down his bag and rushed over and joined everybody else as they started to form a big circle around me. I wondered if Coach noticed him coming in late.
âJust so people know!â Coach yelled. âThereâs probably nothing I hate as much as late.â Obviously he had noticed Ashtonâs entrance. âFor the next tryout, if you come late, donât even bother coming at all!â
Coach was in a fine mood. Iâd start the stretches and try to keep out of his way.
âThatâs it!â Coach called out. âEverybody gather around!â
I joined the group of players assembling around Coach. It was certainly a much smaller group than had started the tryout two hours before. Coach had gone around and told a bunch of kids that they werenât going to make the team, and theyâd already left. I knew that was hard, but it was pretty
